Mou: 'I insulted him, but no apology'
Tuesday 15 December, 2009
Jose Mourinho admits he insulted a journalist, but the Inter Coach denies pushing him and refuses to apologise.
A fiery but sparse Press conference was held today at the training ground, his first since Sunday’s incident in which he is alleged to have pushed and insulted Corriere dello Sport reporter Andrea Ramazzotti.
Some members of the Italian media boycotted the conference as a sign of protest, while others decided to take him to task.
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say something, as since Sunday I have heard so many things,” opened Mourinho.
“First of all I must be honest and admit it’s true that I insulted your colleague with a word that I cannot repeat, as it is offensive. But there was no attempted attack or physical contact.
“We reached this point not because of something that happened on Sunday, but a process that has been going on for months. It is certainly my fault that I offended him, but it is also the fault of the journalist because he knew at what point we were and also the fault of Inter staff who did not intervene.
“There are Press rooms and mixed zones, but I won’t have journalists by the door of the team bus, as that is a place I want to protect. Game after game I always found your colleague in the same spot and repeatedly told him he should not be there.
“Whereas every week I said 'Why is this man here?’ it happened that on Sunday I used a different word that I cannot repeat. Twice.
“However, I will not make a public apology because it was not a public situation. I would be happy to talk to him face to face, because it was a private matter.”
Inter President Massimo Moratti refused to comment on the incident until he knew all the facts, so a fine could well be in the offing.
“If a player had done the same thing in my place I don’t know if I would’ve punished him,” mused Mourinho.
“The club makes the decisions. I am glad there are problems in my rapport with the club, because it is with misunderstandings and resolving them that a relationship improves. I will accept any punishment the club decides, because their Coach should not be using words like that.
“In terms of a punishment from the sporting authorities, that seems ridiculous, as it was out of the sporting context. Aside from those two swearwords I have absolutely nothing to apologise for in my relationship with the media. It was the first and I hope last time this will happen.”
Yet the Press was already furious with the Inter boss for only accepting contractually obliged interviews after the games with Juventus, Rubin Kazan and Atalanta.
“I spoke to the television station I was supposed to, the one that transmitted the Champions League game, and five foreign television crews.”
Mourinho’s tension was palpable in recent weeks and he was sent off during the 2-1 defeat to Juventus.
“I am not stressed. There were important things in the Juve game that happened and the media have forgotten about. It was made to look like a normal match, but it was not. I expected a completely different analysis of the game.
“My week of silence is over, tomorrow I’ll be back on the bench and I promise to finish the game. The referee is the fourth official who got me sent off in Turin and the fourth official is Orsato, who always sends me off, but I promise I won’t give them the opportunity to show me the red card.”
