If I was to build a team from scratch, they would be a defensive counter attacking team.

That does not mean I believe teams who don't have the players to play like that should try to.

I'm not going to tell Barca to sit back and defend, though I think they would be better if they let the opposition have the ball a little more as it would allow them more counter attacking chances.
Counter attacking isn't even on the menu for Barcelona, for me that is one of their biggest deficiencies, even when they get the ball of the opposition and have a chance to counter, their build up is so slow that any chance of a counter is scuppered.

Who would have played a better game?

Please don't say Ronaldo, because Ronaldo has played worse games against teams who have man marked him with only one player and not three.
I won't mention names but saying that no one would have played better than Messi is so wrong.

The difference between us is that you are obsessed with possession football. I am not interested in having the ball just for the sake of it.
It was a point in the game that Sneijder lost the ball and Barca could have made the best out of it with a smart counterattack. They could have passed a long ball to Alves or Messi but instead they went on passing short passes giving needed time to Sneijder, Cambiasso and Eto'o to come back.

Yeah, I wouldn't have my team play so slowly, especially after we win the ball in midfield.

Working the ball out of the back that way is fine though. Much better than blasting the ball up the pitch like we do.

Thats because you can't.

As for the second statement, so true,

Exactly, slow patient build up when starting an attack is fine, but after winning the ball, they shouldn't be so obsessed with playing it simple and just keeping the ball, they should try and counter attack much more.

True.

It happened a couple of times.

The main one I noticed was in the second hald when Inter had four or five players ahead of the ball and lost it high up the pitch. Then (The Great) Xavi decided to play a couple of sideways one-twos with Alves when he needed to move the ball forward fast.

I thought Xavi was really poor in the two games. A player as good as he is meant to be shouldn't be baffled by facing a team sitting deep. They needed to move the ball fast from side to side to drag Inter out of shape and then look for the spaces that would inevitably open up.

Instead they spend virtually the whole game strolling around with the ball in front of Inter without ever looking like getting round the sides or in behind to get into a position to hurt Inter.

oh and reading these past few pages  i guess no player in the galaxy can score against those mighty south-american national team defenses either

Messi is a tremendous talent and on track to being a great player, but the crazy comparisons needed a reality check...

I hate Inter more than everything in my life. It was a nightmare seeing their fans celebrating in the street. Now I have to support Bayern. :sergio:

And YES I don't give a shit about "the good for Italian football".

No of course not. If I mention a name you would sure find an example in which that player had an awful game and this argument will never end (and you know what, Messi IS better than all of them but it doesn't mean that no player can have a better performance than him in certain games). All I'm saying is that such a bad performance is not difficult to be surpassed by other players, especially those who are not meant to be the Messiah of their teams. Those who all the ways to score a goal are not passing through their feet.

or games, of course, just proves my point that you can't name any player who would have done better.

Ronaldo was alot more effective against Inter last year Fred.
Inter did not play ultra defensive football against Man Utd though. I remember Ronaldo having a really good game against Inter true, but like i said, they did not pay as much attention to him as they did with Messi, and Inter were not the same team last season.
