He was better than Messi too in the WC. I think he's a better winger than both, but Messi and Ronaldo play like forwards thus they score more goals.

I think he's been better than Messi in general this past year but Ronaldo has been on fire.

They were the same in WC more or less. He is not better than Messi this past year, not even comparable IMO. Messi only has one competion. They score more goals because they are a lot better players, it's that simple.

Robben also plays like a forward, very selfish type of player, but Messi scores and assists over double of what Robben does. Difference is Messi has this standard where in a year he scores 57 goals and assists 23, is still considered a weak year for him.

Robben should get his dues, and for him that means 3rd best, as long as those two hold the insane level they do, 3rd will be his ceiling, it's that simple really.

Exactly, people subconsciously compare a players level of performance to his own established standard, instead of comparing him to other players level of performance, which is what they should be doing. If Robben had the year Messi had in 2014 they'd build him a statue in Germany and Holland.

If you compare Messi's year with Robben's year without taking into account anything else, like whether or not they improved or regressed from their usual standard of performance, there is no way you can say Robben was better.

It's not even close, they don't operate in the same stratosphere. Compare performances in a short tourno like WC, but over a full year, futile to even discuss it.

here is an interesting fact about Messi. they played Atletico Madrid for the title and guess who was there to give them the final push? Messi, the best player in the world ofcourse. Copa del Rey final, their biggest rival is on the other side. relax Barca fans, you have Messi, the best player in the world. he will deliver when needed. more like he will chocke when needed. CL QF, again vs Atletico. Barca are in trouble, guess whos there for the rescue? Messi.
do i have to mention how he chocked at the WC from QF onwards? but hey, he has amazing stats, who cares that he didnt decide a big match in years. he has xx goals and xx assists, hes the best player ever

Still better then Robben. Would you demand the same from him, to decide games vs the best defense around? No, because he isn't in that level.

Well... Cruyff has confirmed he is a complete moron once again.

"At the highest level of football, individual and collective talent needs to be combined," he wrote in his column for the Dutch newspaper in quotes translated by AS. "So for the second year running, it's ridiculous that the award has been given to a player that has not played in any exceptional manner and only won a few titles."

"Two years ago Bayern won all the titles they could have and the award was given to Ronaldo instead of Toni Kroos or any other member of that Bayern Munich side," Cruyff said.

"In 2014, Kroos was instrumental in Germany winning the World Cup in Brazil, and despite that he wasn't even among the three finalists. At the same time Cristiano Ronaldo was just a spectator at the tournament in Brazil.

"It's quite clear that this is a FIFA award that I can't take seriously."
Toni Kroos for Ballon d'Or?

Ronaldo hasn't played in any exceptional manner the last two years?

Cruyff is just a moron, and he hates everything Madrid related. At least the man could have some objectivity. Ronaldo broke the CL goalscoring record last year, was Europe's leading scorer. Has 28 goals and 9 assists in 17 league games to start this year. Not exceptional. WTF.

Champion's League is the biggest trophy (and toughest to win) in football now. Not the World Cup. Or at least it should be. Real Madrid, Bayern, Barca, Chelsea would all smash any national team in the world.

Cruyff very conveniently forgot that Ronaldo was playing the worldcup half recovered from injury and no way near his proper physical form

But its not like Ronaldo's insane amount of goals in all competitions with real werent "instrumental"

Club teams have always been stronger. What are you on about?
Oh. Cruyff just came out in the media saying Ronaldo didn't deserve the Ballon d'Or and he hadn't played in any "exceptional" manner over the last couple years.

:agree:

Same thing with the CL final. People say he flopped in it, but he was clearly unfit for the last few weeks of the season, the UCL final, and the WC.
