Pace is all well and good, but only if a defender can defend with it. Are there many defenders of the right age who can defend and have athletic ability who are available and for a price we can afford? I can't think of many, either way you would be taking a gamble unless it is a world star.

Say Zapata for instance, he is young and seems to have all the attributes required, but I have seen him make one or two horrid mistakes, and he would undoubtably make more playing for Juventus at the top level. With Cannavaro you would see less mistakes, but perhaps not so much in an all-round capacity and certainly not in any long term scenario or as an investment. But this is the thing, we as fans demand very high standards from our club and its players and staff, so that means winning and continual improvement. Whether we would win in the short term with younger players who have potential to be champions is another question. Will we be happy seeing more younger players come in and have another two or three years of improvement or are we now demanding great signings, Diego, Silva, Ribery etc? Is that realistic?

If, for example, Secco and co added a young talent or two like Zapata/A. N. Other to an experienced signing like Cannavaro, then the Cannavaro signing would suddenly look more appealing. It would provide a balance. I'm not saying this will happen, but surely they see the same flaws as we do, so is a probability. Central defender, full backs, midfield-attack linkman. This is why I give the signing of Cannavaro the benefit of the doubt as a stand alone signing. What the sporting directors achieve from our mercato as a whole will determine our season, and I prefer to wait until the end of the window to make a judgement on signings. Even then, it will be difficult to tell how that will affect the team.

What I don't agree with is running a player down before he has a chance to prove something. If any of you guys don't like Cannavaro for his actions in 2006 then fair enough, treat that as a seperate entity. If you think he is well past his best and are unprepared to give him a chance because of that then that is up to you, you make that choice based on watching him, not from general concensus or opinion. Don't mix the two, he isn't a crap defender because he is a 'traitor'. It all boils down to how he plays, if he plays well and Juve are on the up as a team then all this traitor talk will be forgotten quickly, this is football. If he doesn't play well then he will be judged on that, we have to wait and see. Let's have a bit of patience in this era of demanding instant success. Secco and co have quite a tough job balancing between creating a team for today and one for tomorrow, perhaps they aren't up to the task but I think this will be a defining season for their future. If they get it wrong this summer there is little coming back from that, we can't have another season of underperforming.
Well...we will just wait and see. The deal will be announced in a week or two, so let's hope he will be beneficial.

At the end of the day Cannavaro isnt good enough. Its no good to say that he'll bring experience, somehow if we had signed sheva up front I dont think your reaction would have been the same. I gather a lot dont watch la liga here.

HOWEVER

Now that its happened I wish it all the best ! So welcome back cannavaro

But JuveJay, you are missing the point here, apart from the fact that we have signed a 36year old "traitor". The most important thing is that one more year has pasted and we have built nothing in our defense!!!
We made no step forwards, towards the build up of our future competitive team!!

When we had to sell Canna+Thyram and Zambro, we ve lost our entire D-line
Since then, minimal efforts has been made to rebuilt it.
We cannot build such a strong d-line within a year, but we should start making some additions by now.
Most of the players we got were cheap or free. None of them was meant to be a permanent addition (well apart from the cheaper than Milito, Andrade of course)
a real investment!

Since it has become painfully obvious that the lack of quality players in our defense is our weakest point!
It should have been our priority to enhance that weak defense!
The acquisition of Mellberg was of little help, both in the long run and also gave us no momentary gains. The addition of Canna, now the current Canna is completely useless in the long run. The presence of both Canna and Mellberg is catastrophic, because it will automatically means, that we are not making a fight addition, like Zapata, any time soon.
We do not only condemn our current team to mediocrity, but also our future potential too!! If we were buying Zapata instead of Canna, he might or might not offer what Canna, might or might offer for the 2009-2010 season,
but he would also be of far greater importance/help for our future too.
With Canna, we get just a decent back up solution, not a real upgrade of what we have now and we also sacrifice a slot for a possible upgrade for both now and the future!!

The transfer indicates that we dont have the ambition to compete with the best, this transfer indicates that we are not planning to create a competitive team, with quality players at all posts. Canna is not only just a quick fix for 2 positions (CB)
His name and prestige will abused in a way, when he will be presented as the savior and the answer to all of our defensive problems.
Just like we did with Mellberg a year ago. We will ignore the need for a quality future partner to Chiellini and two decent starter fullbacks, with one just one "cheap" blow.
This is how our boards plans to win the impressions and the impressions alone, evading the root of the problem.
We need 2-3 better starters for our defense, this is a priority, a free half-finished Canna is not the answer to our problems!!
And he is bound to be presented just like that...

The current situation we experience now, is frustrating, but it was rather predictable and avoidable. We have ignored our defensive issues since last year and we have also ignore the need to create a competitive team at all lines.
We paid this mistake twice, both momentary and by compromising our five year plan. And now we are set to repeat the same mistake once again...

So you think that Grygera, Molinaro and Chiellini have learnt nothing this year, this hasn't made them stronger because we are not winning and keeping clean sheets?

You learn much more when you make mistakes, winning is easy. We don't have experienced champions in defence so we can't expect to have a great defence. Next year throw in Cannavaro and another years experience for those guys (not Grygera, never going to be top quality in my opinion) and that is how players build as individuals and a unit. Perhaps Molinaro or the rest will never be good enough but his improvement has been clear to see.

I agree with you about avoiding our defensive issues, completely. All I am saying is that it is a bit early to say that the board are making the same mistake this mercato, surely they can see what we can, and that is that the defensive unit needs improving in terms of quality? Give it a bit of time.

Already did - This is the kind of stop gap measure that will send us reeling back to another crisis when the poor lad doesn't live up to 20% of his former self. Get a decent young defender for the money we will pay for his wages in a year.
