What put me off xgl the most was how much slower my desktop became. I mean ordinarily I'm probably just utilizing my video card at 20% since I don't play any games and I don't do anything graphics intensive. But with xgl, it would run fine while idle, but once the system got some load, RAM started to be scarce, xgl really made it feel much slower.

that is true, overall performance suffers very much. but what put me off most were the constant updates/changes. every now and then a new update crashed the desktop so you had to change scripts and stuff like that. i understand it's alpha software but it's just not worth it, too much of a system hog and too unstable. when it gets to the final stages i might give it a go again just to see how it works.

You already know what I did!!

It was fun for a couple of days, the installation and the configuration was a good learning, but will never go through it again. I screwed up a lot of things while trying to get it to work....I reinstalled Ubuntu 3 days ago, and have a fresh new system now...with no compiz/xgl on it.

I don't see compiz becoming mainstream anytime soon....

I could give Gentoo (and other distros) a try, but when I have some kind of an experimental PC. Currently I am happy with Ubuntu, and I think I finally achieved a full migration from Windows (well 99%, no FM)...I just did a fresh new installation, and it took me like 4 hours only to get everything working....to think back one year it took me around 2 weeks to get the basics working on Suse, I have gone a long way

i thought ubuntu is that power distro. it is to me anyways.

as for trying out different distros that's exactly the reason i stick it up with linux. the ability to try out different things without a need for a "test pc". all you need is some free space and partition program. installing different distros doesn't take over everything like windows.

i'm sticking with ubuntu for a while now, tried suse 10, kubuntu(same thing) and arklinux(a new distro much aimed for xp users). i liked suse very much but one thing really turned me off and that was the way yast dealt with dependencies, or better yet made you deal with them. synaptic is much better imo.

No not really Jack, the guide is useful, but tbh I know and understand most of it. This time around it just served as a reminder of what applications I need to install.
