The more I see it the more I'm convinced it wasn't a red card... actually it wasn't even a foul... But I guess thats just me...
Lets put it this way:
What was your first impression when Anelka fell? It was happening so fast, Abidal was right behind him. I believe a huge majority thought it was a foul from behind.
Even after replays and slow motion you and i can't agree if there was contact or not. You can imagine how tough was it to notice it live. It looked like a clear foul which deserves a red card since it was from behind. The referee was convinced that it was a foul because no way he was going to give a red card.
This can be compared with the penalty call on Malouda. If you watch the replays you'll see that Alves is inside his box while Malouda has one foot inside the box and the other exactly on the line. Replays show it was a penalty. It was a foul for sure so there was no way not to give a foul. But at the moment of the foul, without watching the replays, it was impossible to say if it was inside or outside the box (the line means inside, btw). I don't blame the referee for that mistake because it was a tough call.
But Pique's handball....
Everyone saw it when it happened. No-one needed replays to see it. The ref just waved play on. He knew it was a clear penalty, but he said play on.
My last post on this about the mistakes that took place on that match. I am absolutely sure that Chelsea were robbed. Was it simply very poor refereeing or was there a purpose i can't claim, but the fact stands that Chelsea was the team that suffered from the ref and i couldn't keep calm when people said how the ref was equally unfair to both sides.
