He'd receive the ball on a counter, wait for the defender to catch up, then wait for a second marker and then try something clever. By which time the opponent had repositioned and there was no effective passes to make. That sort of thing doesn't fit into a team where team ethic is big.
At a different time, with a different coach, with less pressure about immediate results (like currently with Ranieri, we're in transition, noone is demanding the title this year), it could have worked out well.
