I think we're worse in terms of depth than last season, sure we got rid of some deadwood in the form of Belleti, Deco and arguably Ballack (though he was useful last season) we let Joe Cole go too, but he was asking for a lot of money and has a habit of spending more time injured than on the pitch, and as much as i like him i think it had to be done.

We also lost Carvalho and didn't get a replacement, i guess Ancelotti is gonna give a chance to Bruma as we only have 3 CBs. (Terry and Ivanovic are already injured)

And i didn't like at all that we sold Carvalho.

I think he shouldn't have loaned Matic, i would've liked to see a little more of him now that ballack is gone and Lampard is injured, i'm not really excited by the prospect of a Mikel-Essien-Ramires midfield if Lampard isn't available. I would also like Kakuta to get more playing time this season.

I think i've told you that i regard Mikel as an average player and not worthy of being a starter, and i also think i said somewhere in this thread that i would've liked a backup striker as Drogba is more than likely to pick and injury somewhere through the season.

Top post, agree completely with it. Yes you said that you didn't rate Mikel, and i kinda agree with you, while he is a calm presence in midfield, he isn't nearly as dynamic enough to fill the anchorman role.

I was really surprised to see you sell Carvalho. In the past few years Chelsea were the team with the most depth in the CB position, now you guys have no depth whatsoever there. Also, you're a bit short in midfield, you should have 6 midfielders for the 3 midfield positions. You guys have Lampard, Ramires, Essien and Mikel.

VDV can play on the left hand side of an attacking midfield position.
It could be that bale will be pushed back to LB to accommodate Rafael.

I kind of doubt that, the reason Bale has exploded over the past 6 months was because he was shifted to a more attacking left wing position.

Yup.

Spurs would have been better off signing another left back, rather than getting Van der Vaart.

Thats true. Assou Ekotto can be a decent leftback when he isn't making silly mistakes though.

I think VDV will be considered a forward player, he'll play behind the striker and will be in competition with Defoe, Crouch and Pavluychenko.

Fred, be a good sport and name the most important signings of the big EPL clubs this summer (or even the mid-table clubs if you think they made good signings).

I'm not too happy to be honest, sure Benayoun could fill a position in midfield when needed, but if he's not going to give a chance to youngsters i would've kept hold of Ballack even if he's past it, he saved our asses in the last part of the last season when he had to play even as anchorman in some matches.

Out of the 4 midfielders we have i rate two of them as high as it can get, i think one is average and i haven't seen the other play yet.

The only reason i can see why we sold Carvalho that cheap is that he wanted to go to Real but still that's no excuse to not get a proper replacement, and for a team who likes to talk about how the CL is our objective i'm not too confident when i look at our squad depth.

I'm not fooling myself because of the 6-0 wins against wigan and wba, if we get a "medium" amount of injuries during the season we're fucked, not only in the CL but probably in the league too.

Oh and i expect Cech to get injured just before a crucial CL match :D

I also think we shouldn't have wasted our time pushing for Neymar (as much as i admire him) i think there were other issues that needed to be addresed before one could think of spending 25m on an 18 year old Brazilian.

Sure.

Needless to say, City had the best mercato this summer. They bought David Silva, Boateng, Kolarov, Milner, Balotelli and Yaya Toure.

All are great signings imo that will make City one of the big teams in the EPL this season. Toure has been their best signing up till now, the guy is so dominating in the middle, but mind you he is playing as an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 with City. Balotelli is an important signing in the long term obviously because he's a big talent, one of the biggest in Europe. Then theres Kolarov who would have been important if it wasn't for his injury, granted, he had an average debut imo.

We had a poor mercato due to the simple fact that we didn't get a keeper. We got two centerbacks in the form of Koscielny and Squillachi, neither of which would be even close to solving our defensive problems, the latter especially is quite an average defender. and we bought Chamakh who most of the time can't finish to save his life, but he's a very good target man, he works hard, and he links up very well with his teammates, i think he would be a useful signing, especially due to the fact that we won't be seeing Bendtner too much anymore.

Chelsea lost a lot of players, and didn't really replace them. But i still think Ramires depending on how long he takes to assimilate to a new country and a new league, could potentially be important to Chelsea. Benayoun is good backup for the wings. Still, they lost J.Cole, Carvalho and Ballack.

Fulham imo made some very good signing for themselves. They bought Rafike Halliche, the Algerian centerback. They bought Carlos Salcido the Mexican from PSV, they bought Moussa Dembele, a talented left footed Belgian that used to play in the Eredivise. Oh and they got Senderos too :D

Liverpool bought in Meireles, Konchesky, Aurelio, Joe Cole and Jovanovic. Most of them could turn out to be very good signings, especially Cole and Meireles. But losing Masch could be too big a blow for them to handle, i rate him highly and i believe he's a world class midfielder(i don't use the term lightly)

United didn't do much. They bought Smalling, a young English centerback from Fulham. but bringing in Hernandez could potentially be a very good signing for them. He's impressed in the first few games he played with United.

Tottenham have made a few good moves too. VDV was a bargain for them, just 12M. Also they bought in Pletikosa for cover, and a young Brazilian midfielder called Sandro who is supposed to be a promising defensive midfielder. Oh and they got the moaning bitch Gallas who could be a very good signing for them, paired with King, they could potentially be a rock solid defense. Well thats if Gallas doesn't throw another one of his tantrums on field and cry like the little bitch that he is.

Ya a few injuries could potentially fuck your season up really badly. Especially in midfield. I still think you guys are too strong not to win the league again. IMO you'll beat United once again to the punch.

I think we'll see Essien or Mikel playing as CB somewhere through the season. :D

Yeah we'll probably win the league, although i think it will depend on how far we make it on the CL.

Thanks. Not much happened there in the last 10 days then. I knew about most of these signings.

This was indeed a quiet summer if even the best EPL teams didn't make big signings.

There weren't many +20m eur signings this summer in Europe, am I right?
Villa, Ramires, Di Maria, Mascherano and Gourcuff (With Zlatan potentially)...and that's all I remember, apart from the City signings.

True. In the EPL this is the lowest transfer market spending since 2006.

Also players values have come back to earth. Now you can get Diego for 15M and Robinho for 14. Last season fucking Chygrinisky went for 24M

Oh and we all forgot one +20M signing. Bruno Alves :D
