i dunno why everyones going over the moon about swp. he's good and all, but he's not worth 21 million, thats nearly as ridiculous as souness' price tag on jenas. swp is gonna have such a different role at chelski than city i really wonder how he's gonna get along. i dont think he's good enough to force either robben or duff onto the bench, and joe cole has had an excellent season too. and with swp's patchy performances i reckon he's gonna have alot of cold tuesday nights playing against derby county reserves

You are right about the exaggerated price, but I see him pushing Cole from his position. And where does Gudhonssen come in this formula is another question.

guess they're gonna put him right behind drogba, let him do all the hard work, and let drogba toe-poke the rebound in. and they're looking at getting essien for another 32 million. i cannot for the life of me believe that essien goes for 32 million when vieira went for 14 and beckham for 17 or so. chelsea's ridicoulous (sp??) amounts of money.

and moanerihno claiming divine status is a load of crap too. which other manager has spent as much as him in the last two summers?

come what may chelsea's gonna be in the same situation ranieri was two years back. too many good players, not enough places too put em.

mourinho is not ranieri. a huge diference. mourinho would still be champion without loads of money. but not with so power like last year when he smashed the others. 12 points!!! ahead

remember fc porto glory days? little money huge wins!!!

That's exactly what I said to one of my friends. Wright-Phillips is an exceptional young player but he's not worth 21m. Juve could get Cassano for less than that, and as you pointed out in a different post, established world class players (Vieira :D) have been purchased for less. Don't let me start talking about paying 24m for Drogba, that's just outrageous, but I suppose Chelsea have the money to add 10m on to their transfer targets' realistic price so...

Dacourt set for Vieira role
Thursday 21 July, 2005

Arsenal are lining up Roma midfielder Olivier Dacourt as a replacement for Patrick Vieira who joined Juventus last week.

Media reports in France on Thursday suggest the Gunners are in advanced talks with Dacourt’s representatives, whose contract with Italian side Roma runs for another 12 months.

It’s not the first time that Coach Arsene Wenger has tried to bring the combative midfielder to Highbury.

After the 1998-99 season with Everton, Dacourt chose to return to France with Lens ahead of Arsenal before joining Leeds the following year.

After playing in the Champions’ League semi-finals with Leeds, Arsenal came knocking again, however this time it was the North London club that pulled the plug on negotiations, preferring the cheaper option of Brazilian Gilberto Silva.

Now, however, given Roma’s fragile financial state, Dacourt could be allowed to go for free, just to trim down the club’s wage bill.

tbh i never liked dacourt. or any other leeds player for that matter, except kung fu cantona. but if he's up for free, then heck why not. aslong as he doesn't hinder fabregas or flamini's development i see no problem

I suppose Roma will reconsider now that they've failed in their attempt to have the transfer embargo imposed on them lifted because they wouldn't be able to purchase a replacement and could possibly lose their new signings which includes Rodrigo Taddei, one of their centre midfielders.

How old is Dacourt anyway?32?

Doesn't make sense that Wenger is signing old, over the hill players instead of the young starlets he usually does.

You said it ashwin. No way is SWP worth 21 million quid. If he wasn't English, and if it wasn't Ch€£$ki, the price would be way less. It's going to be ego soup and salary fries at Stamford Bridge next season.

Dacourt might just end up hindering the progress of players like Fabregas and Flamini which definitely isn't a positive, and I read this morning that he wouldn't join on a free either as his contract expires in 2006.

He's 30 btw.

Newcastle have confirmed that they have made bids for Anelka and Boa Morte.

Magpies eye double swoop
22.07.2005.

Newcastle United have made a double bid for Fenerbahce's Nicolas Anelka and Fulham's Luis Boa Morte.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd has confirmed The Magpies have made move for the pair, although it is understood The Cottagers have swiftly rejected the offer for Boa Morte.

"We have made an offer to Fulham for Luis Boa Morte," Shepherd told the club's official website.

"We've also tabled a bid with Fenerbahce for Nicolas Anelka. We are now waiting for replies from both clubs."

The North East outfit are desperate to bolster their attacking options, with only Alan Shearer, Michael Chopra and Shola Ameobi available to manager Graeme Souness.

Anelka has only been in Turkey for six months following his move from Manchester City, while Newcastle have been long-term suitors for Boa Morte.

The Portuguese winger was in blistering form at St James' Park last season, scoring in Fulham's stunning 4-1 success and he is also believed to have attracted interest from Middlesbrough.
