Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has admitted that he turned down an offer for Patrick Kluivert in the January transfer window.

Souness revealed that Spanish outfit Osasuna made a move for the Dutchman, who has yet to settle at St James' Park since his summer move from Barcelona.

However, with Craig Bellamy falling out with Souness and being dispatched to Celtic on loan the Magpies, who are in Uefa Cup action at Heerenveen this week, couldn't afford to part with Kluivert as well.

"Osasuna did come in for Kluivert before the transfer window closed," admitted Souness.

"But we did not want to let him go. We know what he can do and I am still confident we can get the best out of him, hopefully starting in Holland on Thursday night.

"He will be in our starting line-up and, if he needed any incentive to do well, he should be able to turn it on in front of his own folk."

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has called on the club to do all it can to re-sign Michael Owen if the England striker ends up leaving Real Madrid this summer.
Owen continues to play a bit-part role at the Bernabeu this season despite being their leading goalscorer in all competitions and a prompt departure seems highly likely.

"If Michael Owen considers returning to England at the end of the season, I’d be amazed if Liverpool didn’t do all they could to bring him back," Rush told the Liverpool Echo.

"Regardless of the fact that he’s a former player, whenever a striker of his quality becomes available, you want Liverpool to be competing for his signature."

He added: "With the club having first option should he leave Real Madrid, the possibility will have to be explored.

"Other clubs above Liverpool could be interested in signing Michael.

"That means, if he is interested, Rafael Benitez would need to convince Michael to come back.

"And the first priority in doing so is qualifying for the Champions League, otherwise it would be very difficult to attract Michael Owen or any established class players this summer.

"Knowing Michael, I’m sure he would rather stay where he is for a bit longer.

"But that just depends on him getting regular football. If he is not starting enough, he is bound to get frustrated.

"He deserves more than a role as a sub every week, particularly when you look at his strike rate.

"If he did return you can be sure he will be described as a failure, but I don’t go along with that.

"If you score every other game in Spain, it is a record to be proud of. He could return with his head high.

"The same thing happened to me. When I returned to Liverpool after one year, everyone said I had failed in Turin.

"But I dispute that, I scored 14 goals which is a decent record in a league which was noted for its defensive excellence.

"I had the chance to stay but wanted to come back because I enjoyed life at Liverpool more than I did in Italy.

"The happier you are personally, the more you enjoy your football."

Rush is telling the truth , owen is not in the right place with real:(
Really? He's their top scorer, getting plenty of playing time given the quality of player he's competing with. He's training with truely magnificant players, and adapting to a new style of football. He'd be a fool to give up after six months.

Arsenal 1-1 Sheffield United in the FA Cup. The Gunners were reduced to ten men in the first half when captain Bergkamp was given his marching orders. Substitute Robert Pires gave Arsenal the lead as the game approached its end but an Andy Gray penalty in the 90th minute means that a replay is required.
