If he was going to cover the run he would have had to known Chiellini was definitely going to step up from the defense to lose its shape. The move happened so quickly and accurately there wasn't much he could have done.

The space opened up because of the defender's error, they were playing with 3 CB ffs, how is, Giaccherini, who was playing Lwb, NOT LB, supposed to track that deep into the heart of Italy defense to cover Fabregas, who remember, was playing as a false 9.
Even Left backs don't go that deep behind the CB let alone a winger.

Did u saw this picture? Fabregas is near Giac so Giac should follow him isn't it?! But look at him - he is not watchin' at fabregas and fabregas will pass him in the next 2 seconds!Look at defence - Maggio - De Rossi - Chiellini - Giaccherini, it's 4man defence since bonucci moved forward
