Summer 2007 was pretty terrible, as was summer 2009.

If a good CB is signed, this summer will have been far better than either of those.

I don't think you can necessarily judge how bad a mercato this is until we see the results. IMO, a mercato that brings in good player performers on the cheap would be astute. A mercato that splashes out lavishly for duds is a great failure.

Clubs like Napoli, Lazio, and even Palermo have been able to sign great talent under our noses to develop a stronger club while we floundered paying big money for disappointments.

we ve heard both of those excuses before...

and swag, this transfer director works end when the season starts, his job considering our needs was horrible, i could imagine a worst possible mercato, than a total waste of our budget and many mediocre CMs, Ss and overlook of our defensive and left flamk issues for the 6th consecutive season...

Early indications, yes. But not to defend them unnecessarily, there's little point about whining about a mercato until you see the results. The rest is as imaginary as a mercato on FM.

We spent more money on transfers than any other club but Real Madrid a couple seasons ago, and look where that got us.

no buying a LW or CB and favor the acquisition of 3SSs is a stupid managerial decision, regardless of the result.

We can only go us far because of this incredibly stupid decision making, the set up a huge handicap, for any coach to overcome.
Despite of the degree Conte will fail and the degree the performances of the rest of our players will vary, the stupid managerial decision should not be judged/affected by the result, but from the direction.

So do give an example.
3 brothers buy 3 identical watches, from a mediocre store, all the watches are broken and only indicate 00:00.
The first one check his watch at 23:00 and believes that that cheap watch is as bad as he thought.
The second one check his watch at 10:00 and realizes the mistake they did.
The third one check the hour at 00:02 and remains with the delusional impression, that he made a fine acquisition, but still, that doesnt change the fact that it isnt!

In our situation, its plain and simple to see what we needed and what we got and the decision making in deals like the Melo's are completely irrelevant to our performances.

This season too we've spent alot, perhaps we've spread that amount on larger number of players but still its alot. Hope it will come good but i have my doubts.

Despite having spent 80% of our budget on CMs and SS, for the past 5 years, this year we also spent the 80% of our budget for more CMs and SSs for the 6th consecutive year, we never learn...

Your example makes no sense to me. At least in that it doesn't even apply in this situation.
