Not that I want to be in the habit of defending Marotta, but look at what he has to operate with. No CL. No EL even. A team with a 7th place finish and no signs of turning that around soon. About the only upside he's got is history and a new stadium.

Just about anybody in that position is going to go from negotiating Nani --> Alex Chamberlain --> Panagiotis Kone.

I know, but we have a difference of opinion as to what level of player we can attract right now. You might say Agüero and Benzema, but Lichtsteiner, Vidal and Vucinic are more what I expected and those to me are good enough to get us top 3 with the right team. This is the clincher: will the other areas of the team that need addressing be addressed? This could decide the season, and I'll say the same as anyone, if they are clear weak areas and not filled then the director takes the blame. Whether you want €25m player, €15m player there or €10m there is open to opinion, we get the right players we have a good team.
