i mean how far do you go with freedom of speech, in some countreis to deny the holocaust is a crime, lack of freedom of speech?
You're not thinking about the complete "story". The guy who is allowed to deny the holocaust can easily be owned by the guy with evidence that the holocaust actually occurred. It works both ways.

Freedom of speech not only allows people to say things that you may not agree with, but it also allows the other side to speak as well. It is up to the people to figure out which they want to follow.

You weren't here to remember this, but I have always encouraged diversity on this forum as long as I was in charge. Whenever you get a bunch of like minded people together it doesn't take long before they'll start pushing for a monoculture and kick out anyone who doesn't fit in. I hated that, I always wanted this place to accept people whoever they happened to be. I think a community that can't take self criticism and accept dissenting voices isn't worth much.

Over the years we've had a bunch of rival fans posting here under the same rules as everyone else, rules that I wrote. The rules did not ban anti-Juve jokes.

Nick/Incubo was a big test case, he came in here as one of the cleverest trolls of all time, posted pictures of Del Piero walking past the CL trophy in 2003 with a sad look on his face, things like that. Predictably, people jumped on him, wanted him out. That's what mobs do, they suppress diversity. I was on his side, refused to sanction him as long as he played within the rules, which he always did. The moderators at the time did the same. The shall we say more cultured members did too, but there was a big (the majority) chunk of people who hated him.

So if it's the Juventuz mob that pisses you off then I'm right there with you.
An even better example is the current divide among the forum of the pro-ranieri and the anti-ranieri camps.

That's a pretty broad examination of the topic wouldn't you say?
Perhaps.

But i wouldnt sympathize with anyone who's going to poke people when he knows they'll react.

The majoirty will always react.Wether its religion or any other sensitive issue. When you crack supposedly harmless jokes in public, you're ignoring how sensitive your listeners could be to an issue. You cant generalize everyone under one category and expect them all to stay calm when it comes to sensitive issues. The only way out of this is to respect the customs, value systems of the area of you're in and abide by them.Cracking a random god on Joke amongst friends is another issue, but doing the same on live radio,in a muslim country is plain offensive.Perhaps Religion has lots its roots when it comes to some Christians, but for Muslims its a very sensitive issue.I wouldnt have spoken against this DJ had he cracked his jokes in a country where Religion wasnt a big deal, but that isnt the case here.

People are emotional, and you cant expect them to act like robots who dont react. When you crack jokes on sensitive issues, you're only asking for trouble. You're such a big advocate of 'respect for humanity' etc..where does all of that go when it comes to Human Emotions?

Why don't some people just abstain from making remarks. These people are just making it worse.

I don't know about the Middle East but in Pakistan people make jokes all the time that involve God. More so than any other place I've been too. The thing is that they don't make jokes that defame God. I don't know what this DJ said but if he was fired for but apparently he crossed the line.

For whats its worth, that single minded mob mentality was what put me off and made me stop posting in this forum between signing up in 2001, till posting now more actively only in fall of 2007.

Sure was. He shouldn't go to prison for having an unpopular opinion which he recinds years later. It's surprising such a thing happened in Europe. I can proudly say, that would never happen in the USA.

That's a pretty weird article. Generally people are sentenced because they deny the Holocaust and have some fascist activities that make them a threat to the general public. I have never heard of someone going to prison just because he denied the Holocaust. If this case is true, it is obviously completely wrong.

In the US we take freedom of speech pretty literally which is why we always have crazy elections. But at the same time, each side is able to refute the other.
The thing in Belgium is though that you have freedom of speech, but you can't lie just to annoy other people in public. Some of the things that McCain and the whole republican party said during the campaign would not be accepted in Europe.
