PARIS (Reuters) - French Football Federation (FFF) president Jean-Pierre Escalettes stepped in on Friday to defuse a row with Italy after controversial comments by France coach Raymond Domenech.

In an interview released on Thursday, Domenech had accused Italy of bribing the referee of an Under-21 international between France and Italy during the qualification campaign for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Domenech had also, in the interview with French daily Le Parisien, praised Italy defender Marco Materazzi for provoking Zinedine Zidane into headbutting him in last year's World Cup final. Zidane was sent off and France lost on penalties.

"FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalettes this (Friday) morning called his Italian counterpart Giancarlo Abete to make clear the comments made yesterday (Thursday) by the France coach were only his (Domenech's) own views", the FFF said in a statement.

France must visit Italy for a Euro 2008 qualifier on September 8 and the FFF added: "The president also wishes that the match in Milan will be played in the same spirit as the first leg (at the Stade de France) in St Denis".

UEFA president Michel Platini said Domenech should provide evidence to back up his allegations or face sanctions.

"We will send a letter to the French federation asking for Mr. Domenech to provide evidence to back up what he is saying and if there is no evidence, we will impose sanctions on him," Platini told French sports daily L'Equipe.

The Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) also issued a statement saying: "Abete greatly appreciated Escalettes' gesture and thanked him for quickly intervening in the issue".

"The two presidents have reaffirmed the mutual respect and maximum cooperation between the two federations, especially in promoting the image of fair play that soccer must always maintain, in acts and in words."

Domenech also told Le Parisien he had doubts about the refereeing of the upcoming qualifier between the two rivals.

"I'm not the one who has invented the stories about refereeing in Italy," Domenech said. "Some matches have been fixed."

Italy's match-fixing scandal, which led to Juventus being demoted last year and four clubs having points deducted, centred on teams trying to secure favourable referees for matches.

Platini warns Domenech
Friday 10 August, 2007

UEFA President and Juventus legend Michel Platini has backed Italy after France Coach Raymond Domenech’s match-fixing allegations.

Les Bleus face Roberto Donadoni’s Azzurri side at the San Siro on September 8 in a crucial Euro 2008 qualifier, but Domenech has increased the tension with some strong words.

The French tactician stated on Thursday that their hardest opponents would be the referee, accusing Italy of bribing officials in the teams’ previous meetings including the 2000 Olympic Games qualifier.

“If Domenech does not submit evidence supporting what he has said he will be punished,” the obviously displeased Platini told L’Equipe.

“We will send a letter to the French Federation asking for proof of what was claimed. If they fail to submit it we will take action and punish the Coach,” added Le Roi.

Domenech stated that refereeing is a main concern in games involving Italy, as he believes match-fixing is a common occurence.

“If it happens once you have doubts, but there are hidden agreements in Italian football,” he declared.

The FIGC opted not to reply to the accusations, stating simply that referees are designated by the international bodies which organise the tournaments and not the Italian Federation.

France apologise to Azzurri
Friday 10 August, 2007

The French Federation has apologised to Italy after Coach Raymond Domenech accused them of match-fixing.

Domenech caused shockwaves when he openly claimed in an interview with ‘Le Parisien’ that the Azzurrini had “bought” the referee during an Under-21 Sydney Olympics qualifier against France in 2000.

“Domenech’s words were representative only of his personal opinion,” assured FFF chief Jean-Pierre Escalettes.

“I am certain that the San Siro match will take place in a sporting atmosphere, just as the game between our two nations in September last year in Paris.”

The statements ahead of the Euro 2008 qualifier on September 8 have stirred up an already tense situation and there are fears there could be repercussions between the fans.

Escalettes is also concerned at UEFA President Michel Platini’s warning that Domenech must either come up with proof of these accusations or face a penalty.

The French Federation President personally rang his Italian counterpart at the FIGC, Giancarlo Abete, to offer his apology and assure that Domenech did not represent the FFF.

In doing so, they have effectively abandoned their Coach to the legal ramifications of his comments.

DoMUNCH (how's that for a Vinman-ism?) can bite me.

If I thought Lippi was lucky for not blowing the final, Domenech was gifted to actually make it -- given what the team had to do in spite of him.

Tardelli: Domenech's a loser
Saturday 11 August, 2007
Former Under-21 Coach Marco Tardelli slammed Raymond Domenech for his match-fixing accusations. “He’s an idiot and a sore loser.”

France boss Domenech claimed in an interview with 'Le Parisien’ that Italy had “bought” the referee in a play-off for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Tardelli was the tactician in charge of the Azzurrini in that 2-1 second leg victory over Domenech’s youngsters and did not hesitate in hitting back.

“Every now and then Domenech says something really stupid,” replied Tardelli. “That’s what he’s like and once again he is trying to provoke opponents. He does this a lot.”

Italy won the tie in extra time after both legs ended 1-1 and the match Domenech is referring to was on November 17, 1999.

Officiated by Cardoso Cortez, the game saw Christian Bassila dismissed for striking Roberto Baronio in an off the ball incident witnessed by the linesman.

“There were two legs to that play-off, so presumably we would have had to 'buy’ the referee in the first match as well,” added Tardelli on 'Rai Sport.’

“Perhaps Domenech is preparing the ground for his fall if France lose at San Siro on September 8. It seems almost pointless answering back to him.”

And yet Tardelli took the opportunity to snipe at the World Cup Finalist ahead of that Euro 2008 crunch qualifier.

“Perhaps instead we should ask why he didn’t win more with the formidable Under-21 squads he had at his disposal. He never won anything. So these are the idiotic statements of a loser.”

Italy are the most successful side in the history of the European Under-21 Championship, having won the competition in 1992, ’94, ’96, 2000 and 2004.

tbh domenech didnt get france to the final, zidane did, it was he who motivated the squad whilst domenech sat back and took all the credit

Domenech is a coach who selects his players based on the month they were born in, I wouldn't take him too serious. He obviously has issues.
