I came across it a while ago when it was mentioned by a professor at Cambridge uni, saying that it's the real big debate for us over the next few decades. Sooner or later, these things will be put into practice in one way or another, and massive legal, moral and philosophical questions will arise from it. The issue is, the way we have always understood what a human is and can be may have completely changed in this time.

Ray Kurzweil has some interesting predictions on this and some of his predictions have been correct in the past, like a computer defeating the best chess player champion.

What are your thoughts on the Singularity and the Transhumanist philosophy? Pretty much led by Google and the like these days?

Technical singularity? I saw Ray Kurzweil speak in SF a couple years ago on the topic. He's a little bit of a nut job, but the concept absolutely makes sense to me. One notorious example: in encryption theory, Moore's Law allows you to start decrypting a cypher later and finish sooner because the CPU clock cycle capacity increases faster over time than what you'd gain by deciphering earlier with the older technology. Events like that happen all the time.

As for Transhumanist philosophy, they're just narcissist bastards who won't admit it publicly, but they mostly think they are part of the chosen ones who should live perfectly and forever because they are all God's special unique snowflakes. What I would do to punch them all in the face...

The thing about him is Google has hired him and given him a free reign with their incomparable resources to make his ideas happen.

With the Transhumanists, they actually believe they can become God's themselves, super strong, super intelligent, living for hundreds of years and even forever in a virtual reality.
