I agree! but its this season with the wide guys that im sure we would have seen a much better Diego than previous. Shame but this is football.
It would have made much more sense to do it at the beginning of the transfer window.

I don't think Del Neri ever planned on keeping Diego. Some players just don't fit the plan, regardless of their talent.

not all 4-4-2 formations are a drag...Spain Euro 2008 is a good example.
Spurs 4-4-2 is pretty wild as well. Aside from Modric, they really don't have spectacular players. They just move forward as a team, defend as a team, and have guys who can cross the rock.

exactly! weve always played 4-4-2 and it showed last season with the 4-3-1-2 bullshit that it didnt work as we based our team around diego. Im happy were going back to 4-4-2.

It's an awful decision no matter how we look at it. I don't seem to find any logic in such a move, none zero. He was due for a break out year a la platini.

the problem was we DIDN'T really build the team around him,we had a lot of (poorly performing) square pegs in round holes last season, this year with wingers is where we should have seena lot more of Diego.
as for the 4-4-2,this is the same formation we stuck to rigidly for years and yes IT CAN be succesful, but think about every team that plays the 4-4-2 well and they all have marauding fullbacks that overlap and allow the wingers more space in which to play.
do you honestly think we have the players to do this well,or,like me,do you fear that we are going to have 2 fullbacks that hate to get over the halfway line,2 wingers left high and dry as the opponents double up on them and a midfield pairing so lacking in pace that we are completely overrun in the middle?

god will be be crying for some creativity then.........

Del Neri will be using the 4-4-2 and diego wouldnt really be in any part of that unless in a 4-4-1. but del neri wants 2 strikers and wingers so diego wont really be a centre mid so aquilani being our ball player (if fit)

I think the issue is out wide. None of the wingers can cross and most like to curl inside, which exposes the wide positions to counters against suspect defending full backs.

Oh i agree with Diego being alone and this (with the players brought in) would have been his season without a doubt. but think were talking formations first and Diego doesnt fit in which i can understand also. Del Neri obviously has made his mind in what formation hes going to use. Ferrara was forced to play to 4-3-1-2 to accomodate diego which back fired drastically. As we never had any full backs which was any good ala maicon. Motta will give his fair share of runs im sure of that but im cringing at the fact of De Ceglie being our LB. im sure we'll get a left back before the window shuts. but all in all im happy with these signings.

i am just disappointed that by selling Diego we need to recruit at least one SS and a very good fullback and even then we still look lacking in creativity

whoo-hoo back to bludgeoning teams into boredom and taking the 3 points with a scrappy 3 yard tap-in
