PARIS (AFP) - France coach Raymond Domenech pulled no surprises as he named his 22-man squad to play a friendly match against Argentina in Paris on February 7.

And one player who looks certain to feature is Juventus forward David Trezeguet, who Domenech said needs a confidence booster after missing the vital penalty that handed Italy the World Cup last July.

Playing in this match holds special significance for Trezeguet, whose parents are both Argentine.

"I imagine this match pulls at his heart-strings," said Domenech. "There are those who suffered from not playing at the World Cup. His pain is another degree higher than that.

"He took the penalty that handed the World Cup to Italy. He needs a confidence-boost. I am expecting a lot from him during this qualification campaign."

Trezeguet may play against the land of his father


PARIS, Feb 1 (Reuters) - David Trezeguet was only eight years old when France last played Argentina, the homeland of his father.

Next Wednesday the Juventus striker may face the Albiceleste in their first game against the French since 1986.

The former Monaco forward has been included in a 22-man squad to face Argentina at the Stade de France, almost seven months after missing the penalty kick that gave Italy the World Cup.

Trezeguet, who has been forced to stay at Juventus despite the club's relegation to Serie B following a corruption scandal in Italian football, said last year he had thought about quitting international football.

His father was from Argentina and returned home in the late 1970s after playing as a defender with second division Rouen.

The player, who grew up in Argentina, started his career at Platense but did not get a chance to make much of an impression.

"I took his Argentine roots into account, it must be something for him", said Domenech. "But that was not the criteria."

Trezeguet's French experience could have been brief.

He had trials at Paris St Germain's summer training camp near Paris and appeared set to sign only for the deal to fall through four days before the transfer deadline.

After playing for Monaco, he joined Juventus in 2000 and earned his first cap for France in January 1998 in a 1-0 victory over Spain for Les Bleus's inaugural game at the Stade de France.

Trezeguet spent less than two hours on the pitch over three games at the World Cup.

He came in as a substitute in the 100th minute of the final only for his penalty kick to hit Juve team mate Gianluigi Buffon's cross bar. "He suffered a lot. I have talked with him about his desire to quit," said Domenech. "He might need this game more than the others."

After stealing Roberto Baggio, Juve are now going to upset La Viola by buying their star, Luca Toni. Hehehehe! Didn't I suggest that as something to do to annoy La Viola's tifosi? :D Looks like Juve are trying to hit back at Fiorentina, trying to increase the price of Bojinov.

This is kind of surprising coming from Domenech, glad to hear it though...

Again today, Trezeguet in an interview with L'Equipe said that he'll stay with Juve if they will have a team that fights for the scudetto...

Trezeguet shared his thoughts on the game with French journalists: “The France-Argentina match is something really special to me on a personal level; it’s like two parts of my life are meeting head on. All my family are going to be there at the stadium. I have wonderful childhood memories of Argentina, the first time I kicked a ball, my debut for Platense. It’s true my idols as a kid were Maradona and later Batistuta, but I also had a keen interest in the French rugby team and the Formula One driver Alain Prost”.

Lets hope Trez comes back injury free. We have too many players injured. We want to be able to field a team, when the football starts up again.

Didier Deschamps will be without David Trezeguet and Valeri Bojinov when the squad resumes training on Tuesday. The two strikers have been called-up by their respective countries for the week’s friendly engagements.

Following the tragic events in Catania, fixtures involving the respective Italian international sides might have been cancelled (Senior squad, Under-21s, Under-20s and Serie B Under-21s),but games throughout the rest of Europe will go ahead as planned. While Trezegol heads for Paris, Bojinov is off to Cyprus. A four-way friendly tournament will be held between the 6th and 7th of February, with Lithuania and Hungary joining the boys from the Balkans and the host nation. Tuesday’s semis between Bulgaria-Lithuania and Cyprus-Hungary will be followed by the finals on Wednesday.

Both of the Bianconeri are expected back at Vinovo on Thursday.
