I actually thought he was better this game on the WHOLE than when he faced Atletico last season. His general play and selection of passing was superb. He also displayed shades of his younger self with some vintage wing-play. The main difference between this game and the Alteti one was that everyone was generally more fired up that time round and certain players had the game of their lives (Bernardeschi) which aided Ronaldo. This time, he had absolutely no-one remotely close to his level so his heroics was always likely to go down in vain. After the 2nd goal, I knew we had no chance of scoring again unless he pulled another rabbit out of the hat.

You're looking at it from one angle only. What about the fact that our midfield has declined since 2017 and is almost non-existent? I'm pretty sure that also contributed to the reduction of goals scored.
