Wow, what a crazy guy! Totally anti-science conspiracy theorist, also very selfish and unethical! Sounds almost like what I've been saying for half a year now!
I think he’s saying that there has been enough time and vaccination rates are high enough now to hopefully not swamp hospitals, so if you aren’t vaccinated at this point and you are one of the unlucky ones, too bad for you.

Half a year ago, hospitals would have been fucked by delta. They almost were even with restrictions as vax rates were down closer to 50% at the time.

7 day average hospitalization rate in the city is about 2.5% of cases (64 of 2,609), meanwhile only 6 deaths. The vast majority of all being unvaccinated. You can look at these maps and the all the dark areas are either more conservative voting or majority black (50% vaccination rate, lowest in the city).

The latest variant testing data is only from 11/27 though, where delta accounted for 98% of tested cases. I'm curious as to how that would look now with omicron. Similar to Colorado, New York state is now requiring that businesses have people wear masks indoors where vaccinations are not required. Not sure how much I can see it being enforced though.

No reason to keep things locked down forever. Sadly, it's the unvaccinated causing most of the infections anyway.
I disagree. The opposite is the case. At least here with our glorious 2g system where the vaxxed mix and match at concerts and all kind of events without ever getting tested. It's obviously not a problem for them as they won't get really sick from it, but still.

@Quetzalcoatl @Bjerknes @Ronn

Now here’s a governor I can support. Vaccines been out for a year. Every major study thus far still showing they are well over 80% effective in stopping serious illness. Time to open things up.
Meanwhile, following a new governor’s order, in my office the mask requirements are broadened and now we have to have them on all the time even when we’re in our own cubicles. Ironically the people who made that decision are not impacted because they have their own rooms.

But I also wonder how many asymptomatic vaccinated people there are as well, that's a good point.

That's why some of our experts want tests even for the vaxxed. To be able to keep track of infection chains. You have all kinds of events and you simply don't know who infects who and shit.

Problem is, not having to do any testing is arguably one, if not the biggest reason why people get the jab in the first place.

So that prolly wouldn't help when you try and get more people vaccinated, so I doubt it's coming.

BoJo made an announcement tonight that plans were in place to give all over-18s the chance to have the booster (3rd vaccination) by the end of the year. That is some undertaking.

Basically Omicron variant cases are doubling every couple of days and this has started to spill over to hospitals now.
Its crazy though, we've only registered one death from omicron and the government are losing their shit. Studies are already showing that omicron is significantly milder than other pre-existing variants

Colorado seems to be the best US state

rectangle shape, nature, mountains, legal weed (don't care for it but it shouldn't be criminalized), Peyton Manning, good governor
Man, my first time really travelling around Oakland, CA in ages yesterday. The whole city is one gigantic weed town. All the billboards in town advertise dispensaries, differentiated only by whether they are "eco", fun, happy, or friendly neighborhood. Late capitalism, baby!

No reason to keep things locked down forever. Sadly, it's the unvaccinated causing most of the infections anyway.
I feel for the people who are going to need urgent medical care. And I feel for the health care workers... their kids call this "the crying virus" because daddy comes home every day crying.

But idiots be idiots. Covid Passover must happen. Mark your lamb's blood and let the Angel of Death take care of the rest.

I had Covid and didn't pass it to my spouse, or anyone I came into contact with that I know of. One female friend I know just had it and her spouse didn't get it either. She's actually been around a lot more people than I have and everyone seems to be negative. Actually, I know of several people where this happened. The only commonality here is that everyone is vaccinated. So obviously it's making a difference.

Same thing here. We were both vaccinated. We even got the booster on Friday, I got sick the next Tuesday.

We didn’t have a vaccine for Delta, so I don’t get the fretting over an Omicron-specific boost, which it isn’t.

Getting one this coming week in the good old USA. As a Type 1 diabetic, my health is already a slave to the system.

Mixing my continental flavors in something you might call vaccine fusion cuisine.
they’re talking about offering booster doses soon for those who were vaccinated first, but as far as i know, it’s just the same vaccine again.

Depends on the vaccine. Some are half doses of the same.
I can remember Pfizer and AZ stated in January when Alpha was prevalent, that they would be able to create a new vaccine within 4 or 5 weeks. So now 10 months later we have Omicron (which does reduce the efficacy of the vaccines somewhat), and yet they haven’t made a new vaccine.

Sinovac Shot Gives No Shield For Omicron, Hong Kong Study Says
    • Effect of a third dose of Sinovac’s vaccine remains to be seen
    • Chinese shot is one of the most widely used globally
The vaccine made by Sinovac Biotech Ltd., one of the most widely used in the world, doesn’t provide sufficient antibodies to neutralize the omicron variant, said Hong Kong researchers in initial lab findings that may have sweeping consequences for the millions of people relying on the Chinese shot to protect them against Covid-19.

Among a group of 25 people fully vaccinated with Sinovac’s shot, which is called Coronavac, none showed sufficient antibodies in their blood serum to neutralize the omicron variant, said a statement from a team of researchers at the University of Hong Kong released late Tuesday night.

In a separate group of 25 fully vaccinated with the messenger RNA shot developed by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE, five had neutralizing ability against the new variant, the scientists said. That’s in line with findings released last week by the companies, who said a third shot would be sufficient to protect against omicron.

Led by Kwok-Yung Yuen, the highly respected professor in infectious diseases at the University of Hong Kong, the study of 50 people has been accepted for publication in the medical journal Clinical Infectious Diseases and is available online as a pre-print.

While much is still unknown about how Sinovac’s shot reacts to omicron -- including how T cells, the immune system’s weapon against virus-infected cells, will respond -- the findings are a blow to those who have received the 2.3 billion doses of Coronavac shipped out, mostly in China and the developing world. With omicron seen to be at least four times as transmissible as the delta variant in a Japan study, the prospect of having to re-vaccinate against the new strain will set back the world’s efforts to exit the pandemic.

If Sinovac is found in more conclusive studies to be ineffective against omicron, China, which has managed to insulate the vast majority of its people from Covid-19 with closed borders and strict containment measures, faces the biggest threat from the new variant, said experts. The government has given out 2.6 billion homegrown shots -- many of them Coronavac -- to its population of 1.4 billion people, but now faces the prospect of having to develop new vaccines and rolling them out again before it can shift away from its current isolationist stance.

    Natural Immunity

Among other countries using Coronavac, previous infection waves would have conferred some natural immunity that will help ensure “no major impact” from omicron, said Benjamin Cowling, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Hong Kong.

But the populations in mainland China and Hong Kong have experienced no large-scale infection before, leaving them vulnerable.

“The Chinese authorities have worked hard to have a high vaccination rate across the country but the mutability of the virus means that the impact of those efforts has been significantly reduced,” said Nicholas Thomas, an associate professor at the City University of Hong Kong who has edited several books on foreign policy and public health.

“The two-fold challenge now facing China is how to ensure that their population is again protected from omicron and any future mutations, plus managing the flows of goods and people over their borders when the rest of the world is moving to live with the virus,” he said.

The country has detected two omicron cases so far in returning travelers, with one of them being discovered over two weeks after he entered China.

The Hong Kong research team has exported the isolated omicron virus to China’s government and vaccine manufacturers for development of the vaccines targeting the new variant, they said. Sinovac said last week that it was studying how its vaccine holds up against omicron but gave no timeline for releasing results. The Beijing-based company did not immediately reply to requests for comment on the Hong Kong University findings.

The scientists also advised members of the public to get a third vaccine dose as soon as possible, while awaiting the next generation of shots. But whether a third dose of the present Sinovac vaccine will improve the neutralizing antibody response against the omicron variant remains to be determined, they said.

Antibodies, which the researchers studied, are one important arm of the immune response that protect people from infection. The other arm of the immune response is cell mediated immunity -- known as T-cell response -- which can protect people from serious illness and death.

If this variant turns out to be anything serious, they're fucked. Combine this with the slump in their property market, it's looking like they might have very difficult start to the new year.
