I tried it on my third visit. It's not that good but I find it fitting when there. But getting stuffed at Urbani is one hell of an experience
I quite liked it, but just one of them will do. Not something I'd drink on a regular basis.

But don't get me started on local restaurants. Those in itself are a reason to visit Turin. So many excellent options. Reasonable, or even cheap, prices. Wine lists to die for, ...
Damn, I miss them

Yes, most of the restaurants are great both in what they offer and the price tag. I am not a wine guy myself but those wines from the region around Alba are really good.

I can see @Post Ironic enjoying bicerin

This has to be some sick fucking joke. We can't ease the measures for the coming months because of the British variant and meanwhile in friggin Britain (where this mess started) they have announced going back to normal on the 21st of June. Explain to me @JuveJay why your country shows 0 solidarity with the rest of the world?
I don't really know what you're asking. The variant from Kent is basically a hyper mutation that has probably formed from one person. That it's currently the most problematic is by chance alone. You may find a variant springs up in Groningen or Antwerp or Sarajevo, but the only way it can be effectively kept within a country is zero travel across border. I don't know any European countries that have had total travel restrictions during the last few months? I can see that Belgium currently has. Meanwhile Serbia has open borders and light restrictions...lol.

Talking about timescales, it's obvious that the UK will recover quicker than other countries from this as we are the origin country of this variant. Just as the original virus was more quickly "under control" in the source country of China and it's neighbouring countries. But there is also a radical drop in numbers for people here affected by the stronger South African variant because when it is identified there is mass testing within that town or region, they are strict with it. I don't think this is going to be the case within many parts of the EU. In fact the response from EU members individually and collectively seems quite embarrassing. In the UK testing and jab deployment has been extremely fast.

The UK is also a world leader (probably the world leader currently) in genomics and are one of only a handful of countries who can even identify different variants, simply because the industry itself is in an early stage of development. But they don't keep this information to themselves, it goes onto a global database of genome sequencing that allows access for scientists from countries who do not have the resources or expertise to identify new variants.

If you're referring to access to vaccines (AstraZeneca) then there is obviously going to be a degree of political play when you have the EU and UK making trade and political moves in the background of this pandemic. The EU failed spectacularly in their "power move" on Northern Ireland, and that won't be forgotten easily. EC bureaucracy and red tape is also a constant hinderance, something Brexiteers advocated against, and that has been shown again in the worst possible way with delays from the approval stage to current logistical application of the vaccines. This article speaks about it in far more detail than I could: https://www.politico.eu/article/europe-coronavirus-vaccine-struggle-pfizer-biontech-astrazeneca/

Piemonte wines are my favourite. Barolo, Barbaresco, etc. So good.
Ive been to Barbaresco. Charming village. We stumbled on to a restaurant there who didn't have a menu and all who work there can only speak Italian. When we lett them know that we were hungry, we got one of the best meals I have ever eaten.

Do you think this will last forever?
I think lifestyle will drastically change. We might see fans on the stands but I don't think we'll have life like we used to. Some people, like myself, find it disgusting and forced so I think over there we'll see more and more people who'd say "fuck this, give me my life back", but I think we'll have organizations and states put restrictions on us rather forced.

I don't see much changing with the vaccines.

Latest update in a long line of amusing oddities from good old, reliable Belgium.

Last june, the government provided a mask for each citizen. Free of charge, obviously. You just had to go to you local pharmacy to get one (or more). I'd say that's a nice gesture.

At the time however, there was already some criticism because it looked like a shady deal. It cost a few dozen million, but the supplier of the masks was some unknown foreign company with no expertise whatsoever.
Rumor had it, local companies could not bid on the contract: they could not enter their bid in time, since the contract with that random company had already been signed before the tender had been released. And there's definitely some truth to that rumour, seeing how I personally know someone who works for a company specialised in breathing protection & other types of PPE. His company would have entered a proposal (for a much lower budget even) for which my friend would have been responsible, but they couldn't.
All because of the excuse that things had to happen "quickly". Yep, quickly, as in more than 3 months after the start of this thing.

Cut to 8 months later.
Our government, who provided us with these masks, now urges people NOT to wear them. They have already been banned in numerous places by now as well.
Because, you know, we're not convinced that the material that was used to make them is safe. These masks might actually be dangerous, we're not sure. We'll look into that. Yes, you read that correctly, we'll look into that after providing them to people. Because quality control beforehand is just such a silly notion.

Ffs, if I something like this happened on a tv show, I'd criticize it for being way too far fetched. :sergio:

I can't believe you are doubting the veracity of the good old AbestoMask. I keep a few of them in stock.
