This, combined with providing more test kits to clinics, will have more impact on controlling the outbreak than just travel restrictions.

Looking at the latest numbers from Italy - it looks like the contamination there is massive and their healthcare will be overwhelmed. They have 10 times more severe cases than South Korea, perhaps meaning that they have 10 times more infected people.

So far it doesn't seem to be all that dangerous, does it?
The problem is the high number of sick people at the same time. Even if the severe number of cases is low relative to the total number of infected people if 20% of northern Italy gets infected for a period of one month, this will mean around 5 million people. If out of those 5 milion only 0,5% need medical care - 25 000 people have to be hospitalised.

20% sounds pretty high. But yeah, it will be a big burden on governments around the world. However, the anxiety around it is probably causing more harm to the economy than the disease itself.

Even with RT-PCR testing (which is far from 100% accurate) around 20% of the whole passengers and crew of the Diamond Princess got infected - 705 out of 3711.

Worth remembering that Italy has a higher ratio of older people (over-65) than pretty much everyone, Japan excluded.
