MIFA president S. Vell Paari said this was the first time a team from Asia would be competing in the 59-year-old invitational tournament for youth teams.

The other notable youth teams for the championship include clubs from Santos, Rome, Genoa, Torino, Perugia, Sampdoria, Inter, Naples, Parma, Spartak Moscow, Pakhtakor, New York Stars, Anderlecht, Maccabi Haifa and Fiorentina.

MIFA have a tough draw placed in Group One together with home sides - Juventus, Palermo and C.A. Juventud of Uruguay.

"We have been preparing for this tournament for about a month now and we hope this trip would benefit these boys. The valuable experience would do them a world of good to be exposed at world level and to rub shoulders with some of the best youth teams from Europe," said Vell.

Juventud sounds like a typo, the s and the d are next to each other actually.
    :D

The confusing thing in this championship is how they put the winner and the runner-up clubs in the same group although they had 11 other groups to put them in!!

Aussies Beat MIFA 1-0 In Friendly

The Malaysian Indian Football Association (MIFA) football team, here to play in the World Club "Copa Carnavale" Championship, lost 0-1 to Australia in a friendly Saturday.

MIFA, who are drawn in the same group as defending champion A.C. Juventud of Uruguay, Juventus and Palermo of Italy, had the better of the exchanges throughout the match but failed to capitalize on the many chances that came by.

However, despite the loss, team manager S. Pathy was optimistic of his team's chances in the "Copa Carnavale" after seeing his boys put up a spirited display despite playing against their bigger-sized opponents and under chilly conditions.

"This is the first time the boys are playing under such (cold) conditions and, in fact, this was their first international match and though we lost, they did not show any signs of freezing under such conditions.

"This is certainly a very positive sign that they will be ready for the bigger matches in the championship," Pathy told Bernama after the match.

The "Copa Carnavale" comprises 48 teams from all over the world vying for the title of World Club championship.

Apart from Malaysia, Australia and host Italy, teams from Uruguay, Holland, Brazil, Argentina and some of the most famous clubs in the world are competing here.

MIFA play their first match on Feb 6 against Palermo before taking on defending champion A.C Juventud on Feb 8 and Juventus on Feb 10.

The team, competing in the championship for the first time, arrived in Rome yesterday and experienced slight difficulties in adjusting to the chilly weather conditions that dropped to 8 degrees Celsius in the morning and evening, but Pathy felt that since they arrived two days before the championships, the boys would be able to adjust themselves.

"Some of them have not even travelled abroad before this championship, let alone experience such weather conditions or opponents. But since MIFA is on a team building process, they are bound to gain some valuable experience even if they do not win the championship," he said.

    who cares about this
It's centered around the Carnevale di Viareggio, which is quite the bomb. My Italian teacher, who was born around the time of Christ, is from Viareggio, and she often brings back video of the pretty funny political satire floats and the like from it.

I have to attend one of these days. Looks like some pretty crazy shit:

And of course, no Italian festival would complete without the hot chicks

    Uncertainty lingers over Viareggio

Following the steps taken by FIGC commissioner Luca Pancalli, it’s not just the championship calendar which is at a standstill. Uncertainty also hangs over the celebrated Torneo di Viareggio. The 59th edition of the world famous youth team tournament was due to kick-off this afternoon with Milan and Santos going head to head in the opening game. As things stand, the tournament’s official website displays the following announcement: “The Centro Giovani Calciatori announces that, following the interruption to all footballing activities sanctioned by the sporting authorities, definitive answers regarding the organisation of the 59th edition of the Torneo Mondiale di Calcio Coppa Carnevale will not be available until late Monday evening (5th February)”.

Vincenzo Chiarenza is obviously concerned about the outcome. His Primavera outfit should already have arrived in Versilia but the postponement of fixtures has led to a change of plans. The team continues its preparations at the Juventus Center in the event the tournament gets the go ahead. “That’s right, we should already be in Viareggio preparing for our opening game with Juventud – commented the Bianconeri coach – For now we’re playing the waiting game but I hope we’ll get a definitive answer in the next few hours. Our bags are packed, we’re just waiting to find out when we can leave, or if we can leave. We’ve been forced to change our plans and modify our preparations, but it’s all relative, especially when you compare the inconvenience we’re experiencing with what happened on Friday evening and the pain the family of the inspector must be going through”.

    Chiarenza: “We’re ready”

Juventus’ moment has finally arrived. The Trofeo di Viareggio is ready to welcome back the most dominant team in recent history. The Bianconeri have a remarkable record at the tournament - three victories and a runners-up spot in their last four attempts – and one that assures them a place among the favourites yet again.

Group 1 will be no easy ride though. With their opening game against holders Juventud postponed until next Monday, the Bianconeri begin their campaign against Palermo. Impressive in the league and semi-finalists in the Coppa Italia (where they were beaten by Juventus 3-0 in the first leg), the Sicilians are not to be underestimated, as Vincenzo Chiarenza will testify.

There’s good news ahead of the match (kick-off at 15.00) after it was announced that the gates will be open to the public: “Playing behind closed doors wouldn’t have made sense – began Chiarenza – having people in the stands will help the boys mature as players. I’m pleased the decision was reviewed as the crowd factor adds to the entertainment”.

And entertainment is not something which has been lacking this year when the Bianconeri have been involved, as their Coppa Italia tie of the 24th January would demonstrate. However, as the coach pointed out, the game today will be an altogether prospect: “This is a different game, another event entirely. On a psychological level, they are likely to impose themselves more today to cancel out that result. We’re in good shape though and we know what we’re capable of. We’ve been in Viareggio for a few days now, and we’ve been able to relax as well as put in plenty work hard. It’s a shame about De Ceglie, who travelled here with us but was then called back by Deschamps, but we’re hoping to have him back for some of the later games”.

The playing surface today is one thing he won’t be able to account for: “We’ll also have to see what the pitch is like. It’s a nice day today but we’ve had rain in the three days leadings up to the game. We played here against Red Star Belgrade last year and the pitch was pretty heavy back then as well. Let’s hope we can repeat the result”.

In the group’s other clash, holders Juventud take on Malaysia, a game which Chiarenza’s will be following closely: “There’s always a surprise package among the foreign sides. Last year it was Juventud, but who’s to say it won’t be Malaysia this year? I’ve heard from people who’ve seen them play that they are a very mobile outfit. We won’t be underestimating them on Saturday”.

Wednesday was not lacking in surprises either, with Fiorentina, Napoli and Perugina all beaten and Torino held. Meanwhile Sampdoria, Juventus’ number one rival in the league, had no problems bagging their first three points.

Why DD want De Ceglie to back for the first team if he doesn't let him play ?
i think he should let him play in the Primavera team in Viareggio ..

    Giovinco takes the plaudits

The tournament at Viareggio has a new star: Sebastian Giovinco. His two goals against Palermo this afternoon gave the Juventus Primavera a dream start at the 59th Coppa Carnevale. With group rivals Juventud in ruthless form against Malaysia today (11-0), the three points against the Sicilians could well prove priceless in the Bianconeri’s bid to reach the second phase.

After a hellish journey to the stadium, Juventus finally lined up with Trini in goal, Rizza, Pisani and Di Berardino in defence, Bettega, Venitucci, Bianco and Cuneaz in the middle and a striking partnership of Maniero and Venitucci supported by Giovinco in the hole.

Despite struggling early on as the Sicilians looked to erase memories of their recent 3-0 defeat in the Coppa Italia, it was the Bianconeri who drew first blood, Giovinco giving them the lead on the stroke of half-time with a deft free-kick. Buoyed with confidence, they made it two early in the second period, Giovinco latching onto a long pass by Bettega and thumping home his second of the afternoon. There were no further changes to the score line and Juventus can now begin preparations for their clash with Malaysia on Saturday.
