No I mean are there players such as Marchisio in other clubs worldwide?

The ones that to do the dirty work that nobody likes and ones that don't show up in the pitch. In that regard he's probably unique.

There are players that do the dirty work of course and every team has one, but they do real dirty work, not just running around for 90 minutes like headless chickens. They put in fair amount of tackles, recuperate balls, win duels all around the pitch and so on... As for Marchisio last night, little fellow had 1 duel won, 1 tackle and 1 interception, so besides running up and down to close that right side he did nothing what most of other players couldn't do in that position.

Anyhow, am I alone in thinking Marchisio could/should have scored last night? Near the end of the 1st half Casillas spilled a shot which Claudio could have gotten to, but he was sleeping at the time. I was not amused, as following through on shots is really basic stuff.

Offside it was I think.

The definition of this type of player is, I think, the slippery part here. Obviously he doesn't have a double(or perhaps we just can't see it and HE HAS!)...
But I do remember both Chelsea and Arsenal sides seemed to have fielded their share of the 'ghost type' when things were going wrong for them...

As for Khedira he's a DM. He was great for Germany (didn't follow much of Real) but again that's far from the same type.

How is Flamini very much expected to be involved with the team? Don't you think the presence of Pirlo, Pogba and Vidal - on paper a much better midfield, marginalizes Marchisio's role?

I think they are quite different even in their approach towards the game from Marchisio. Marchisio must weight at least 15kg less than Khedira for starters and I am certain that ain't fat...

For Khedira is a bit easier when everyone around you are basicly football wizards. Every team has their own kind of players like these and in every team they play differently, but they have to have them.

The question was: which other teams play players who are expected to run and do the dirty work for others? My answer was: nearly all.

Ours just happens to also have the ability to be a match winner. In the CL.
