Do you guys think Marchisio's effectiveness is particularly stunted when Vucinic isn't playing?
He's a victim of his own versatility, he'll go and do the horrible job that most others won't, and he has stepped right out of the limelight as an individual since Vidal was given an advanced role and with the introduction of Pogba as an effervescent midfielder.

No one covers as much ground as he does, no one is as tacticlally disciplined as he is, the way he helped Caceres shut down the right side is great, but people will still find a way to blame him.

Are there are more players in the world who do that 'horrible job that most others won't'? Those that aren't noticed.

I don't think there's any.

He did all the dirty work

Oh I like it. That's a new one.

His best position is when he's playing in a more advanced role as part of the middle three. That's where he played in the first half of our 11/12 season. After winter of that season, him and Vidal switched places and Vidal has been playing the advanced role ever since. He still does a lot of the dirty work which goes unappreciated around here.
Don't mind Dusan. He doesn't know anything :D

What are you talking about? The players he rates highly are usually excellent.

I think this particular game was a little different to judging him in his normal LCM role. He was given a task to protect an area of the pitch. He doesn't have the physicality of Pogba or tackling strength of Vidal so he's not a player you want isolated 1v1 or in individual battles. When he's given that role he's covering an area, preventing wide players from marauding just by holding position and being a nuisance. Marcelo went past him with pure speed I think once, in the first half. Ronaldo a couple of times from a very deep position, obvious. Marchisio on Marcelo, Vidal and Caceres on Ronaldo, that was the plan. He's also played this role on the left side before, sometimes quite obviously to the detriment of his individual performance.

Clearly if he is tasked with being a breaking LCM with runs into the box, 1-2s and shots and he is going into 'ghost mode' (not playing well) then criticism is no problem, personally I think he has spells where he does this. But rarely these days is he given that opportunity, he's withdrawn and caught up in the midfield area. Maybe he just can't be bothered to break forward, maybe he has no energy in every single game, or maybe he's just not being asked to do the same things anymore.

It'll be interesting to see what we get from him in a potential 4-3-3 over a time period. My bet will be going sideways to cover whoever our left back is for that particular game. I'd like to see him in a real box-to-box turned attacking role going in-between the DM and CF area.

No I mean are there players such as Marchisio in other clubs worldwide?

The ones that to do the dirty work that nobody likes and ones that don't show up in the pitch. In that regard he's probably unique.
Often several. In pretty much every successful team that has won anything, ever.

I know, i just thinked about all the players he rated through the time i've been here.
Come on now, one of them is bound to turn out good.

Anyhow, am I alone in thinking Marchisio could/should have scored last night? Near the end of the 1st half Casillas spilled a shot which Claudio could have gotten to, but he was sleeping at the time. I was not amused, as following through on shots is really basic stuff.

I believe he was offside, hence the lack of reaction.
