I'd like to know what Marchisio was meant to be doing in the game.
I don't buy the ghost stuff. He plays different roles from much the same position and sometimes he's heavily involved and sometimes he's not, but you can always be confident that he's doing what has been asked of him.
Last night I thought he looked lost for long periods of the game, which is not like him and very unusual for an intelligent player.
You have to wonder what exactly Conte had asked him to do or if Bayern were doing something so drastically different to what Juve expected them to do that Marchisio and Conte were caught out.
He wasn't moving wide to confront Lahm much (until the second half where Juve changed to something quite close to a 4-4-2 with Marchisio playing almost as a LM). He wasn't really getting close to Schweinsteiger. He also wasn't prepared to drop deep to receive the ball and start the play, which is what he normally does quite a lot in games where Pirlo is being closed down a lot.
Rather peculiar, all in all.
