Marchisio has always struggled. He's not a CM, not a LW, he is one of the physically weakest players going round. He can never control a midfield

Nick didn't compare them using their goal stats. He simply says that Matri actually did his job well, which is scoring goals, while Marchisio wasn't doing his job as he's supposed to.

Obviously, although the comparison was skewed because of the mention of the goals. Playing striker is the most niche but also most fickle position on the pitch, you can cover your mistakes and bad games with a goal.
