Pepe was our left winger, yes, and though I think he did an adequate job, apparently he proved himself expendable and was dropped. It wasn't as if Marchisio forced him out of the team with some imperious form, but more so because Del Neri didn't think he was up to snuff and truly viable alternatives don't exist for us (Lanzafame who's been amateurish...and Marchisio).

The only reason he's in the starting 11 is because he did an admirable job against Inter "on the flank" (a tactical choice for helping to control the center midfield, as he hardly got wide).

Regarding your last comment? Huh? Why aren't we playing 4-3-3 now, then? He's sticking to a 4-2-2 despite not being able to count on Lanzafame, Pepe or even Martinez.

So, really, if we were to have a proper left winger --> Marchisio would be benched. Simple as.
Regarding my last comment, yeah, we kind of are playing a 4-3-3 in a way. And Marchisio kind of did force Pepe out of the team; not because of his imperious form, but because he proved to make a great difference for the team.

I would argue that even if we got a great left winger; Marchisio would still get the nod ahead of him in games against big teams. That's the thing some people don't seem to get around here. Marchisio has a little bit of everything in his game. That type of versatility is what coaches love. So when we're up against an on form Maicon, we're going to need Marchisio, not Krasic, to step up.

The point is; he hasn't been our best player this year. But he's been one of the better ones and I think he'll always be a very important member to this team.

Our starting formation has usually been a rather flat 4-4-2, as Krasic has never really started that far up the field to count it as a 4-3-3, in my opinion. Whether we've switched mid-game, that's something else. If anything, Pepe forced himself out of the team by not convincing Del Neri to any great extent (who's stood by his post-Inter confidence in Marchisio). I won't go so far to say that it's a lesser of two evils choice for that spot, as Marchisio's actually not been detrimental since switching, but it's something in the vein. I stick by what I said, if we had a natural winger of quality for that side, it'd be curtains for Marchisio in a starting role overall.

Either way, yes, he's a good all-around player on his day. Not outstanding, and certainly not up there to be categorized as "the best of our season", or even "one of the best". Plenty have been better.

Good point, but I think the new position suits him better, I mean he isn't as effective as Melo and Aquilani are in the center. If Melo kept on performing like last season, that would have been another story. They should stay as they are imo.
The new position suits the team, even if it doesn't really suit Marchisio, but I agree he isn't likely to displace Melo or Aquilani any time soon (barring injury/suspension).

I quite like the balance of having a midfielder on one flank. It makes the 4-4-2 a little more flexible.

Marchiso was one of the best in the pitch today. You'd do have to pay attention because he's not as flashy as Aquilani with his passes but didn't he assist Quaggz?
Doubt we would've won the game without his work. If we get a left winger we should just convert to a 4-5-1 formation with Marchisio in the center

It gives the formation different shapes depending on the flow of the game.

The main reason IMO he's being played on the left is because 1. he helped DC a lot when we were defending and 2. because when we attack Krasic would play right up with the two strikers so we're effectively a 4-3-3 at that point with Marchi, Aqui and Melo. When we defend Krasic drops back into the space so we have 4 players across midfield.

He's been 'quiet' but so has the any opposition who came up against him. Doing a good job. Quietly effective, I'd say.

Player of the season so far? No.

Great game from him yesterday, screw all of those who have been hating.

I see his resurgence coming soon. As for him being player of the season so far I don't agree at all. Melo, Aquilani, Krasic, DP, Quags have all been better than Claudio so far.
