true...........
but counter atack is a must too.we can't play very offensive as you saw they atack very fast very organised.in the first 30 minutes if you noticed we were lucky like hell they didn't score.we were like 2 or 3 players defending and they were atacking with 3 or 4.remember Raul missed one in the begining. we can't play like that.but we can do the way we did against barcelona 2 years ago.
4-3-1-2 or 4-4-2 both close as it changes in the game.I even suggest 5-3-2
-------------------------buffon------------------------
birindelli-zebina-thuram-cannavaro-zamrotta
-----------emerson--------tachinardi/appiah-----
----------------------nedved--------------------------
-----------trezeguet-----------zlatan----------------

we can use one of biri or zambo as a wing when we atack, while the other stays back.

We didn't play, we were just a wall waiting to be climbed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buffon 6 - played a good game, goal not his mistake

Zebina 5.0 - beaten by Carlos' speed and zidane's skills

Thuram 6.5 - surely he has to be the best defender in the world, he has been dominating but he and canna can't do everything

Cannavaro 6 - played a good game but his loose defending cost us a goal

Zambrotta 6 - combined well with nedved but didn't do much with Olivera, nonetheless he played well got some crosses in

Camonarese 6 - I think he did pretty well, some good runs but other then that he didn't influence the game too much

Blasi 5.5 - Just doesn't dominate midfield with his tackles, some very clumbsy and not needed, stupid tackle on raul to miss the next match

Emerson 6.5 - the only player to bring something offensively, we are asking too much of him

Nedved 6 - Played well before getting injured

Del Piero 5.5 - I think he did pretty well in the first half, dropped a notch in the second by losing some ball control, but I think he had the better match of the two strikers

Zlatan 5.5 - Tried to do too much, losing the ball too easily at times, lack finishing, lazy, lack mobility for Juve counter attack, got sum points for his run early in the game

Olivera 5 - Other then that good shot, he was just inconsistent. Bad passes, positioning and control could have cost us some goals.

Tacchinardi 5.5 - Came on the pitch and did nothing more then Blasi, made some bad passes a few ok tackles but not more

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In all, 1-0 isn't all that bad, but the way we played doesn't convince me that we could beat them at the Delle Alpi, only with healthy Nedved and Trezeguet will we stand a chance.

I think Olivera is a great prospect has good skills and explosive style of play but he isn't mature enough for Juve.

I'd start next game with DP and Trez, Zlatan just seems to lack mobility for counter attacks and at times he seems very lazy, he looks good when we play attack rather then counter. I think he has been having too much first team football thus lacking the hunger and thirst.

In midfield I'd start Emerson and Olivera, with nedved and camo on the wings. I know I said Olivera isn't mature enough, but he looks much better at center midfield, and it would be better to field him then tacchi. We nee his skills for attack.

Ok, let me just start of by saying that we were off the pace in last night's game. To start with, we constantly lost the ball, even though the left side had zambro trying his luck to string together a decent passing formation, that was not to be. Nedved as cursed as he is, got knocked out cold for no fault of his, and that pretty much knocked the stuffing out of our attack as well. Del Piero, although cannot be blamed entirely for being his regular anonymous self, did show sparks of genius in the first quarter of an hour. For me though, Camoranesi was our man of the match. He did not give up running through the entire 90 minutes, fighting for lost balls and trying to string together some effective 1-2s. But lets cut to the bigger picture here. Frankly, even though we lost by the smallest margin of a 1 goal deficit to Madrid, i wouldnt like to be fooled into believing that can be easily overcome in Turin. Fact is, it cant. We lack basic depth, creativity and attacking flair which is the only thing that can stop Madrid. Attack, attack and keep on attacking for 90 minutes if you want to play out Madrid. Or simply see the fvcking video from our 2003 2nd leg encounter. That would give us enough understanding that currently seems to be lacking within the ranks, that Madrid are very uneasy when defending. And for god's sake Moggi please address our concerns of creativity and depth this summer. It wouldnt be a bad idea to start by bringing back Chilieni and Maresca. Anyway, hopefully Trezeguet will be back and so will Nedved, but they surely have their job cut out. Anything less than a 3 man attack in Turin, and a 3 goal cushion, would mean we're on our way out of this year's competition.

Well, maybe a 3-5-2 would keep things a little well balanced, I'd prefer Capello to be a little more maverick this time around and throw on a 3-4-3.

And that's my starting XI
Buffon
Cannavaro
Thuram
Zebina
Olivera
Camo
Emerson
Zambro
Nedved
Trezeguet
Zlatan

Real Madrid 1 - 0 Juventus
Helguera 31 (R)
Bernabeu Stadium

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pavel Nedved was knocked unconscious on his comeback, but the woodwork twice saved Juve even if they lost 1-0 in Madrid. The Turin giants had been unbeaten in the Champions' League in the Group phase.

Nedved made his first appearance since spraining his knee on January 23 and was pushed into the starting line-up to help solve Juve's currrent crisis. The Bianconeri have picked up just four points from their last four Serie A games and were without flu victim David Trezeguet, so Alessandro Del Piero partnered Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Former Real boss Fabio Capello returned to face the club where he won the 1997 Spanish Liga title.

Juve knocked Real Madrid out of the competition in the 2003 semi-finals, losing 2-1 in the Bernabeu and winning 3-1 in Turin with goals from Trezeguet, Del Piero and Nedved. The Spaniards brought in new Coach Wanderley Luxemburgo after scraping through the Group phase and improved considerably, though there were problems with Ronaldo's lack of discipline over the last few weeks. Zinedine Zidane faced his former club, while ex-Roma defender Walter Samuel and Director of Sport Arrigo Sacchi also provided an Italian connection.

The Bianconeri had a strong start with Emerson firing over and Del Piero forcing a foul out of Michel Salgado by sprinting past the defender. Roberto Carlos then found space and Ronaldo volleyed his cross off target.

There was bad news for Madrid, as after just nine minutes Salgado limped off with a knee injury and made way for Raul Bravo. Gianluigi Buffon then rushed off his line to pluck the ball off Ronaldo's foot.

Nedved had a good chance on an Ibrahimovic assist, but the challenge of Raul Bravo just did enough to ensure Iker Casillas could get hold of the finish. At the other end, Gianluca Zambrotta prevented Zidane from completing a great passing move with Ronaldo.

Del Piero's backheel found Emerson on the edge of the box and the Brazilian appeared to be tripped by former Roma teammate Samuel, but the referee incredibly waved play on. Soon after, Lilian Thuram was booked for a sliding challenge on Raul.

The first real danger to either side came on 24 minutes. Roberto Carlos out-sprinted Jonathan Zebina and crossed low for Raul, but his shot thumped the crossbar from six yards and Juve breathed a sigh of relief.

A promising Mauro Camoranesi run was closed down and Ibrahimovic's pass for Del Piero was too weak inside the area, but soon after Ibrahimovic cut back for Emerson and Casillas fingertipped his strike over the bar.

The deadlock was broken on the half-hour mark. A David Beckham free kick found Ivan Helguera's free header into the far corner, though he didn't seem to make good contact with it and the ball came off his shoulder.

Nedved clashed heads with Raul Bravo and seemed to momentarily lose consciousness, so he was stretchered off and replaced by Ruben Olivera. Reports from the lockerroom revealed the 2003 European Player of the Year didn't even know where he was when he came to.

Real took control towards the end of the first half - and after Nedved's exit - and there was danger when Figo passed for Ronaldo and he nutmegged Zambrotta, but Fabio Cannavaro was there to clear.

In the second half, Buffon punched a Roberto Carlos cross off Raul's head and Olivera slipped, but Luis Figo was unable to get his shot on target. There was panic in the area when Figo's pass reached Ronaldo in the centre, but Cannavaro performed a stunning challenge. Play had already been halted, however, for a debatable foul on the Portuguese international. Beckham's free kick was charged down by the defensive wall.

Del Piero was a little too late to get on the end of a fine Camoranesi through ball, but Buffon was tested and got down well to push a Ronaldo strike round the near post.

Buffon was again crucial moments later, parrying Zidane's rising angled drive and Raul incredibly turned the loose ball over from close range.

A scuffle broke out between Olivera and Thomas Gravesen and both were booked for their part in the row. The Uruguayan was more effective on the hour mark, when he ran on to Del Piero's pass and had his shot beaten away by Casillas from the edge of the box.

Zambrotta charged down the left and put in a cross for Emerson, but his header was too close to Casillas and well caught.

Blasi was booked for a foul on Raul and will be suspended for the second leg in Turin. The former Perugia midfielder made way for Alessio Tacchinardi.

A low Ibrahimovic cross was parried by Raul Bravo, then at the other end Zambrotta blocked a Beckham cross with his arm, but the linesman pointed out it was involuntary as he was shielding his face. Zebina was perhaps fortunate to escape when he held Raul's jersey in the area.

Roberto Carlos did well to clear Zambrotta's cross before it could reach the head of Camoranesi at the back post.

Michael Owen replaced Ronaldo for the final 15 minutes, but Buffon was forced into another great save on Figo's cross-shot that was heading for the top corner.

From the resulting corner kick, Buffon was beaten by a Walter Samuel header, but the woodwork again came to his aid.

Capello made a late change in a bid to get back into the game, replacing the quiet Del Piero with striker Marcelo Zalayeta.

Soon after, Ibrahimovic had a great chance to score for Juve by gathering an Emerson through ball, but again his shot was too central and straight at Casillas.

Ibrahimovic sprung the offside trap and a great Roberto Carlos tackle stopped the Swede in his tracks.

We played a good game , the defence was solid , our midfield namly blasi and emerson were exceptional , zlatan was useless and wasted chances that a striker should not waste ,luck was in our side twice , we played yesterday WITHOUT strikers , since zlatan in my openion is not a striker , at least for know , if we had someone who can fininsh , i am shure we could get have a draw at least , i hope we can make up the loss next game in turin.

I agree. Blasi does more for the team than Del Piero, that's for sure.
Blasi was exceptional with emerson , i dont know why some are attacking him , ok he is stupid to be banned but he is doing his job:(

:(.

My ratings:

Buffon 6

Zebina 5.5 Not bad, but too reckless.

Thuram 6.5

Cannavaro 6.5

Zambrotta 6.5 Exceptional in the first half, good in the second. Had noone to combine with though.

Camoranesi 6.5 Tried oh so hard, one of the few who showed some skills

Emerson 6.5 Ala Camo

Blasi 5.5 Ala Zebina

Nedved, no rating

Olivera 5.5 Started of very very bad, but looked threatening towards the end

Del Piero 6 Good first half, was all alone upfront in the second half got no balls and no help. So I don't blame him.

Zlatan 5 Del Piero was alone upfront largely due to him :(. Completely uselss tactically. Lacks a football brain, selfisch and arrogant.
Namely when Emerson passed the ball to him cleanly, Zlatan LET the ball go past him so that he could've moved fast foward but the ball rolled out of play. Zlatan arrogantly though, blamed Emerson for his own mistake!

It seems to me that our greatest fault against Merdrid was our lack of precission in the passes, loosing and dividing many balls, and the slow rythm we play offensivly, giving them lots of time for reagruping.
Anyway, we suck tonight. We were lucky just to eat one....

Buffon....very good, always there when needed, was his merit to sustain a minimal diference in the score. nothing to do with the goal.

Thuram...two or three desattentions but breaking many dangerous moments with his timing. Very reliable defending, not so when trying to left up with the ball.

Zebina...The weakest link in our defensive, and the one that Madrid uses to atack us. He was totally dribbled and outruned...Zizou was having a great time at his expenses. 70 percent of the danger was coming from his defensive leakings...we need to find someone better for next year

Canna...sharp, focused, always clear to break the ball. Other responsible for the minimal score.

Zambro...He begun very cold and uninspired but got in the game and in the second half he was good at atacking but better at defending. Some good crosses.

Emerson...A multipling man who works double-turn in the midfield. Tonite, imprecise with his passing. Even so, the one that is always near the ball.

Blasi...he lost the tone and get panicked... not a good stand in champions league....always trying to doubling back emerson, but with and axe in his hands...not his night.

Camo: good shape, run a lot , but today too defensevely orientated. It look that when we are able to contain rivals in the middfield with emo and blasi, camo tends to take more atacking role and we created more chances. I will like to see Capello place him more advanced and more centered...the problem is him having backing up Zebina too much. Are we becoming camo dependant in attack???

Olivera: Lots of good will, but was never focused in the game, and Nedved shoes are still too big for him.

Nedved: was moving well and get some interesting arrives but far from his best shape. Our midfield loose compaticity when he left.

Tacchi: the usual one.

DP: Constructive and clear in the first time, tired and erratic in the second one. Still, far from good shape....much more valuable with the trident formation. One or two good plays and thats all.

Zlatan: A genius that doesnt seem to know any language in common with his fellow teammates...Did you saw how he left Samuel and Salgado eating bananas in the left side with his play? the problem with him. is that if the play is complicated, he makes it easy. Also, unfortunately, if it is easy he will make it complicated. A too egotistical genius....hhhmmmmm

Zalayeta: he lost the bus and didnt make it for the game.

Anyhow, Merdrid left us alive. I dont feel confident about the Dellealphi games, but anything is possible...even to win....

lack pce on the counter, defensily we looked easy to break open if they thought about it, lacked midfield presence bar emo/neddy.

Rosiky or an enzo would have been quality.

Someone with pace would have been very very usefull on the counter.

Without neddy we could be licked. At least if trez gets back, the team can just wang the ball towards him and hope he gets a shot off. Otherwise, dp, camoa nd oli will have to wake up.

Capello confident of going through Tuesday 22 February, 2005

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Fabio Capello claims he is content with the scoreline at the Bernabeu and is confident of turning the tie around in the second leg.

“While Pavel Nedved was on the field we didn’t really struggle and Real Madrid feared us,” noted the tactician. “Ruben Olivera took a while to get into the game in a new position.”

There was also controversy, as Ivan Helguera’s winning goal came from a free kick awarded for a debatable foul on Zinedine Zidane.

“The goal came from a free kick that shouldn’t have been awarded. It’s difficult for referees to keep their cool in this kind of arena where the crowd puts the pressure on them to favour the home side.”

Referee Lubos Michel also failed to stop play when Nedved clashed heads with Raul Bravo – an incident that saw the Czech international stretchered off.

“I immediately noticed something was wrong with Nedved as he wasn’t moving,” explained Capello. “He lost consciousness and can’t remember anything about the incident, but there’s nothing to worry about now and he’s already better.”

Nedved and David Trezeguet should be back to full fitness for the second encounter at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

“I don’t think this is a bad result to take away from Madrid. They were only able to hurt us from set-pieces and we had two great scoring opportunities and didn’t make the most of them. It won’t be easy, but we have every chance of turning this tie around in Turin. Of course, to lose 2-1 would have been better, but I think today we proved that we are improving. The main danger in the second leg will be the counter-attack.”

Former Serie A stars proved decisive on the day, while both Raul and Walter Samuel rattled the frame of the goal.

“Zidane was on one of his best days and, along with Roberto Carlos, was the key figure in making the whole team play. In a fortnight we’ll work something out for him, but our main priority will be scoring two goals,” concluded the Juve Coach.

Former Inter star Ronaldo claimed Real Madrid would go to Italy looking to further increase their tally.

“I have a bit of pain in my toe at the moment and wasn’t at my best today, but I hope to do better in the second leg,” said the Brazilian.

“I think the scoreline could have been even greater, especially as we hit the woodwork twice and weren’t able to make the most of these chances. This team always tries to score goals regardless of the situation, so it’s unlikely we’ll emerge from the Delle Alpi without getting at least one.”

Ronaldo also caused controversy this week by claiming it was impossible to win in Serie A because the referees favoured Juventus – an ironic call considering the manner in which Real got their winner today.

“I was only talking about what I lived through in Italy. What I said was hardly new!” grinned Il Fenomeno. “Unfortunately, referees make mistakes and often more in one direction than another. The free kick on Zidane could have been given and it could have been waved away.”

Alessandro Del Piero had a bright start, but rather lost his way during the second half and was eventually substituted by Marcelo Zalayeta.

“I think we did well for the first half-hour, then lost our shape a little and gave these great players too much room for manoeuvre,” said the captain. “When Nedved went off, we also lost a lot of our propulsion from midfield.”

“We knew it was going to be tough here and had some good chances, so clearly there is regret as it could have been 1-1, but objectively Real could also have scored more. We’ll study Madrid’s away games and try to overturn this result by really attacking their defence, which is their weakest area. We look ahead to the second leg with optimism.”

Fabio Cannavaro proved decisive with some last-ditch tackles and explained what it’s like for a defender to face the Galacticos.

“In these games all you need is a set-piece to break the deadlock. They managed it and we didn’t,” said the former Parma man. “The problem in playing here is that Real are constantly moving around and don’t give you any precise points to focus on.”

Real Madrid's best defense last night was their possesion. we have no idea how to get the ball from them. And even if they lost it, they dont have to run around to get it back..they only need to sit back and before long Juventus will generously present the ball back to them. juventus dont know to win possesion and what to do when we have them... we cant crack Real untill we crack this problem...

Some of you seems to be a bunch of morons, the problem isn't Zlatan-DP, the problem is that we doesn't attack with enough ppl.
Zlatan was left alone in the attack 90% of the match and when we finally attacked it was with like 3 players. How the fu*k can you expect us to score when we play like that?

Dude it was totaly mutural, Del Piero did nothing. And everytime Zlatan got the ball he had no options, same goes with Del Piero. Neither of em's fault though. We didn't lose because of these two, we lost because of our midfield. YOU CANT play defensive against Real Madrid. So this result was expected.

Look at Osasouna and Bilbao. Both of em controlled Real by playing offensive football.
Next game Capello might be forced to 4-3-3 due to Blasi's suspension (I believe he's still going to play 4-4-2 though with Tacchi) and then we will win with one or two goals.
