CL Preview: Juventus-Liverpool
4/12/2005 1:44:00 PM
With the tie delicately poised at 2-1, Juventus and Liverpool will both be confident of securing their passage to the semi-final of the Champions League. The encounter should be a far cry from the game at Anfield, as Real Madrid learned, Juve are more than capable of overturning a first leg deficit.
BACKGROUND
With Juventus preparing to host Liverpool at the Delle Alpi, security has been stepped up for this high profile encounter. Memories of the infamous Heysel disaster have resurfaced with a minority of Juventus fans snubbing Liverpool’s symbolic gesture marking the 20th anniversary of that fateful day. Both managers have been keen to stress that the encounter should be remembered for football reasons as both clubs and fans try to move on.
Juventus were not at their best at Anfield, and had to hang on during a frantic first half. Two goals down at half time, the “Old Lady’ did improve after the restart and managed to grab a vital away goal thanks to some poor keeping from rookie keeper Scot Carson. The bianconeri return to Turin knowing that they have been in this position before and managed to turn the result around as they did against Real Madrid in the previous tie. Despite losing in Madrid, Fabio Capello’s side were immense as they sent Real crashing in the corresponding leg. Juve’s plucky performance ended Spanish interest in the competition and Real followed Barcelona home.
Juventus were not at their best at the weekend and were subsequently held to a 3-3 draw with Fiorentina. Whilst Juve never hit their stride, Capello will be pleased with his side’s resilience, battling back after each goal. Whilst Milan have received plaudits in Italy for their stylish football, Juve have been tenacious and dogged under Capello. Milan may be more exciting to watch, but Juve may just have the mental toughness to see them through to the final. The side that faces Liverpool on Wednesday should be more refreshed with Emerson returning from a muscle strain and Ibrahimovic back in good form.
Liverpool’s Jekyll and Hyde season continued at the weekend, as they followed up their impressive win over Juventus with a damaging defeat to Manchester City. In the Champions League Liverpool have looked impressive, wins against Leverkusen and Juventus have proved that they can match any team on their day. When Liverpool have looked their best, it has always been with Steven Gerrard at the heart of their team, as the Englishman has driven them on and carried the side at times. The England international has been added to one of the Premiership’s largest injury lists after picking up a muscle strain against Manchester City on the weekend and will take no part in the tie. The loss of Gerrard could be vital to Liverpool’s chances of progressing, with Benitez considering replacing him with Xavi Alonso who is returning from a long injury layoff.
Liverpool are once again the underdogs in this tie, a label that has suited them since they began their Champions League adventure under Benitez. Whilst Liverpool do have the quality to get a good result in Turin, Juventus need just a 1-0 win to progress. Juve have won many games by that score line this season and will be confident of doing so again.
TEAM NEWS
Juventus:
Fabio Capello has almost a full squad to choose from for this match and can call on nearly all of his first team stars. Zebina was injured during the first leg and looks set to be replaced by Birindelli at right back. Frenchman Trezeguet looks set to start on the bench after struggling with injuries and lacking form. Del Piero and Ibrahimovic will start at Anfield.
Liverpool:
The Reds welcome back Xavi Alonso who returns from a broken ankle he picked up at the beginning of the year. Morientes is ineligible for the tie after appearing for Real Madrid already this season. Talismanic captain Steven Gerrard misses the tie with a muscle strain. Traore, Garcia and Warnock are all passed fit. Cisse has been included in the squad and could make a shock appearance if goals are needed. Hamman is out and will be replaced with Igor Biscan
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Juventus:
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has looked good all season for Juventus, but has still to improve on his finishing if he is to be one of the worlds best. Against Fiorentina at the weekend the Swede showed that when his finishing is on song he is unstoppable. Zlatan scored a stunning double and proved that it is a matter of time before he is one of the best in the world. Ibrahimovic is both strong and incredibly technically gifted and can trouble any defence with his guile. Now that his finishing is becoming more clinical he looks frighteningly good.
Liverpool:
The Reds have relied heavily on the quality of Steven Gerrard on many occasions this season and without their captain it is up to Carragher to keep Juve at bay. The defender has been outstanding this season and has proved that he is one of the best centre backs in the Premiership for Liverpool.
