When opponents press us we just throw the ball to Mandzu and go from there. Mario took a day off with Fio, because he doesn't respect them, but I expect different performance from him in CL.
That's a failed experiment
If you want to hoof long balls to Mandzukic so badly, play him as a target man and bench Higuain.
And everything I said about Mandzukic was also right.

He’s not a winger, he never will be a winger because he’s not good enough on the ball. For all his defensive workrate, he basically offers nothing going forward.

He played out of his skin last season. His workrate was unbelievable and he made a good make-shift winger; but that tactic was never going to work for long.

This idea that we should just hoof long balls to Mandzukic on the wing as our primary attack option is not only a failed experiment, it’s downright embarrassing.

Not as embarrassing as your posts.
Sorry if I came across as overly aggressive. I’m merely moody because of how poorly we played today.

I have explained (multiple times) in detail why playing Higuain and Mandzukic together does not work. It is basically impossible to counterattack with a striker who is slow (Higuain) and a winger who has no close control (Mandzukic).

The responses I got when I posted this before the game was laughing gifs. :rolleyes2

I can understand why Mandzukic is so loved by our fans. He puts in 100% effort in every game and scored that amazing goal in the final. Unfortunately, sometimes 100% effort is not enough. He’s not a winger, simple. He doesn’t have the skillset for it.

So we played DC in the middle and Berna on the wing (where it should be the opposite because Berna plays in the middle better than DC ) to surprise Tottenham?

- - - Updated - - -

The last good round of 16 first leg performance I remember was vs Dortmund. Even in that match they had more passes than us. We've been always playing $#@! at this stage.
The only silver lining is that we usually change at this stage of the season. Hopefully with Matuidi and Dybala back we won't be playing like this. And hopefully Buffon won't have a day like this either.
We should not rush Dybala and Matuidi. More chance for newer injuries. It's not like they immediately play good after a long period of no football anyway.

1. We pressed hard early on

2. We scored two goals

3. Spurs eventually woke up and began passing the ball around

4. We got tired because we can’t attack for a prolonged period of time

5. We began defending in our own half

6. We conceded two goals

Allegri DNA
For more than 10 minutes, because attacking requires less energy then chasing the ball all game.

The two man midfield clearly doesn't work against teams that overload the center, but I'm not sure starting a 19 year old Bentancur, a physically diminished Marchisio, or Sturaro would have made a difference. Simply put, this team needs Matuidi healthy to play a 3 man midfield vs great opposition. It's not easy to start Bentancur, Sturaro, and Marchisio (right now) over Bernardeschi.

Using all his attackers at once also meant that Juve had no spark off the bench.

Credit to Poch for anticipating that Allegri would be forced into a winger heavy formation as he added an extra attacking CM in Lamela in place of Son who is a winger. Khedira and Pjanic were overrun centrally 2 vs. 5 as a result. Those asking why Khedira started, would you rather one of Bentancur, Sturaro, or Marchisio in there in the German's place?

This tie is still 50/50 as long as Matuidi and Dybala are back in the starting line up in London.

--------------Higuain
-----------Costa--Dybala
----------Matuidi--Khedira
----------------Pjanic
Sandro--Chiellini--Benatia--Barzagli/MDS

This tie is giving me a reverse of Chelsea vs Juve in Conte's first year sort of vibe. The upstart Juve were down 2-0 in London to the champions only to comeback 2-2 before thrashing them 3-0 in Turin. It essentially lead to their elimination. Now Juve need to avoid the flip from happening to them.

Hopefully, this team responds the way that they did away to Dortmund in 2015. Juve need to score at least twice since the chances of shutting out Tottenham are slim.

Recent positive crucial away performances for Juve under Allegri:
3-0 @ Dortmund
3-1 @ Sevilla
2-0 @ Porto
2-0 @ Monaco

Juve need any of those scores to advance. If only Higuain made it 3-0 or 3-1. If only Mandzukic made it 3-1 to start the 2nd half. Now Juve have it all to do.

Those that didn't watch the match are more hopeful than the others, obviously since we were getting ran over and suffered for the whole match except the first 10 minutes.

It's still possible we advance, however that's going to be hard and we'd need to not play the same way
In other words to score and not concede which will be difficult.

I like Bernardeschi but he is not there yet..
Hopefully with Mautidi in our mid and Dybala in attack we`ll be better in defense and attack..
It wasnt a good game part for the first 10 minutes but the good thing is based on what happened the conclusion is we can definitely make it in London - We need to take advantage of their not that great defense and with Matuidi in midfield it will help the team defend.
It felt like its D.Costa and Higuain are the only attackers out there so with Dybala it should change
My prediction 2-1 win in London - Tottenham to get a red card in the 2nd half

PS amazing first goal by Higuain

Bench Mandzukic for the return leg. Absolute liability on the left wing. His 'defensive workrate' also happens to be overstated. We are going to be playing on the break again so we need pace on the counter and we are not going to get it with a slow thuggish player who is likely to ruin every counter attack if the ball gets to him.

Gonna be miserable 3 weeks.
@ Torino
Atalanta
Atalanta (Copa)
@Lazio
@Tottenham

With the league this tight and CL up in the air, these next three weeks could go a long way toward determining Juve's season. This is going to be such a stressful three weeks. Mama mia

That's what happens when Mandzukic plays every game. The man gives everything but was physically spent. Dybala, Cuadrado, and Matuidi need to get back ASAP. Starting Sturaro or Bentancur even a physically diminished Marchisio aren't good enough options.

I have to say Allegri messed up here. We somehow managed to hold on until halftime, yet he still refused to fix the glaring mistakes. Hell, it looked as if he didn't even try to adapt.

The tie isn't over as far as I'm concerned, but we're going to need to play a perfect game over there.

Buffon 5,5 - Did well for the most part, but the second goal is on him, sadly.
De Sciglio 5,5 - Okayish. He's not gonna bring something extra, but he's reliable enough.
Benatia 5 - Some really fine interceptions, coupled with some ridiculous runs & awkward positioning.
Chiellini 5,5 - Not exactly flawless, but at least he tried to hold things together. Had to cover for Benatia quite often, which didn't always end well. Case in point: the decisive foul...
Alex Sandro 5 - The usual.
Khedira 3 - I don't want to be too harsh, because what can you honestly expect of him in a 2 man midfield? But what exactly did he do?
Pjanic 4 - Set up a few attacking moves. And is a complete liability for 90% of the time.
Bernardeschi 5,5 - A bit raw, but he'll get there I think.
Douglas Costa 6 - I'm undecided. Even if I'd say he was our best player last night, I don't know if we can afford to have him on the pitch. He brings something to the table none of our other players do, but at the same time he's just jogging along 80% of the time.
Mandzukic 5,5 - Average game. Can't fault his workrate, but that wasn't enough last night.
Higuain 6 - We all saw what went down.

Bentancur 5,5 - Average

I think we played pretty well, especially in the first 25 minutes. Tottenham scored because our defence was preparing to move up the field and Buffon was not inspired in his rushing out. Kane didn't have the speed to cut on the inside and shoot and from that position I don't think he would have scored had Buffon stayed in goal. And on the second goal the wall was badly positioned.
Other than that Tottenham didn't really posed any problems for us in front of goal.
I think we can get the win in London if we play like we did last night and be a bit more clinical in front of Goal.

I think we can still get the result in london. Especially if matuidi and dybala are back. But allegri needs to stop this shite with mandzukic, khedira and the 4231 formation. It doesnt work anymore. It doesnt get the best out of any player in that final third.

Clean sheets against average teams in serie A means nothing. We play against filth week after week but as soon as we face a quality team in europe we just seem to buckle and concede goals. The long break mid season should be there to help prepare for the CL in the year but for us it is detrimental. Especially when Allegri expects a striker to play as a defensive winger and a slow moving german who blows hot and cold in a two man midfield.

Can’t wait to see Dybala the cl savior
Don’t get your hopes up, even if he’s fit. The guy won’t handle the pressure

I agree that our midfield duo had the worst game, but disagree about Higuain. The first goal he scored carved them right open, the 2 penalties they conceded in the 1st half were in a way a consequence of how shook up they were by that. His general link-up play also was the best I've seen from him this season, it's definitely more than a 6.
