Look, its extremely simple.
Nobody is denying messi isnt a goalscoring machine. But here is the deal. As very visual this season more then the last, without Xavi Messi isnt nearly as profilic. Especially against better organised teams.
Back in the day, he was getting these godlike assists all over the damn place, and he frequently popped in hattricks. Extremely few teams if any could say they got a game without a goal from messi.
Looking at the post Xavi period, we see messi score the big majority of his goals against lesser teams.
One needs to remember, he plays for a very offensive team with alot of talent that plays in his favor.
Players like Zlatan and Diego Costa, dont score as often as Messi did, but didnt have nearly the offensive talent. Athletico did made the final, and PSG only fell undeservedly against Chelsea(without zlatan) after giving up a good result in the first leg (with zlatan).
Ronaldo is a level above him currently. His goal to game ratio has totally ran out of controll. But over a season, Costa and Zlatan were just better. And then there is the case of suarez, who was mainly held back by a very shitty liverpool team.
Thats why the front 3 is Zlatan, ronaldo and Diego Costa.

Yeah, but it's not all about CL.
If a player scores 50 goals a season in the strongest league coefficient wise of course he is going to be considered.
Thats 2 seasons ago. With Xavi fading last year, his goal tally has dropped significantly. not that 41 in a season is bad, its excellent, but its not what it used to be.
I hope people will soon realise just how good Xavi actually was
