Folk are reading too much into this.

Samp were defending comfortably until half time.

Werder were not doing anything with their possession until they scored a long range goal.

Samp hit the post at 1-0 and that would have changed the whole tie.

Werder then scored again, not through making a chance, but through a stupid individual mistake.

So, by my reckoning, there was very little in the game, but things went Werder's way on a couple of big moments.

All the game showed, as if it wasn't known already, is that German teams are more athletic than Italian ones.

Good post, although this is so 'small time' Italian in mentality, it's just what I expect an average 4th placed team to do, like Udinese did, or Chievo lol. But Werder Bremen were always favourites in this one. Samp were on a prayer to get through this without the coach who got them there, crazy for them to go into a CL qualifier in this situation.

It does when there isn't a big difference between the levels of technique and organisation of the clubs.

German sides have been more athletic than Italian ones for as long as I can remember, but Italy used to have fantastically gifted technical players, but they have disappeared/got old, so Italy has nothing now.

The Marassi is a difficult thing all together, they have given themselves half a chance, although I think too much to do, personally. Has anyone ever been there for a big match? It's pretty fierce, but Germans are the least likely to be phased by that.
