but really whats a winger? an AM who plays in 442 variant?
It makes a world of difference. Stick Messi in a 4-4-2 and he'll be a completely different player. Guys like Bale, Camoranesi are wingers in a 4-4-2 that hug the byline, Ronalodo, Messi are forwards who attack from the wing and cut in the middle. Completely different players and positions on the pitch.
They do. For me guys like Bale were always proper wingers, Ronaldo and the such are new generation of wingers/forwards who rely on a basic system, be it a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. Completely different types of players.
That's how I see it. Besides, 10 years ago guys like Messi, Ronaldo, Dinho were practically non-existant. Their positions, which you call wingers, I call forwards, came with the popularity of the 4-3-3, left footed players attacking from the right, etc. They're basically never in the defensive side of the game, something which wingers generaly do.

If we're gonna put Bale and Ronaldo in the same bracket, we might as well put Pirlo and Zidane in the same bracket. What, they're both playmakers and play in the middle. Yeah they play from the wing, but are completely different types of players.

never said he wasnt a good player i was arguing the whole best in the business argument, and why take a risk on a player who might or might not adjust to a different league when theres already a successful one at hand is what i am saying
There's definitely a bit of knee-jerk going on. At least it's used on someone talented.:D

I don't know if he's one of the best overall, but he is on some of the best form among players in his position.

I'd take him on my team without a second thought.

Bale is the best winger in the world currently, no doubt about it. Ronaldo is a forward, just like Messi and they play in a 4-3-3. Bale is a winger in a proper 4-4-2. Ronaldo, Messi and even Robben would be completely undermined in that system. If we're gonna compare Ronaldo and Bale, we might as well have compared Ronaldinho and Nedved back in the day.
I agree about Messi not being a winger, he'd be a completely different player in a 4-4-2. But Ronaldo has played most of his United career as a winger in a 4-4-2 system. Robben played his best season last year on the right hand side of a 4-4-2 system too. So how can you not classify them as wingers?

I can understand not classifying Ronaldo as one because he hasn't played as an out and out winger for almost 3 years now, but Robben is a pure winger, that is for sure.

That's a rather dumb argument. Gerrard scored over 20 goals one season for Pool. Guess he's a forward now!
So did Lampard. Half of those being penalties.

And Bonucci outscores Amauri. So what does that make Amauri? Utter shit, that's what.

Goddamn stupid arguments, always were your forte when you get lost in the debate.

Bah, I don't even know why I put Robben in there, someone mentioned him. Perhaps because his play is similar to those other two, with his left foot on the right side, but main point is Messi and Ronaldo. He's a winger in my eyes, but Messi, C. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, guys who strive in a 4-3-3 are definitely not.

I completely agree about Messi and Ronaldinho.

Ronaldo is debatable, but i'd take your point, because he hasn't played as an out and out winger for many years now.

Robben is in the debate, i think he's a much superior player to Bale. Ribery too when he's fit and on form. I'd include Nani ahead of him too, you could make arguments for players like Di Maria, and i guess Malouda is better right now too, even though i was never too fond of him. Not taking anything away from Bale mind you, i think he's underrated here, i think he's quality and i think he's one of the best wingers in Europe.

You dropped your "u", sir.

If you desire satisfaction see my second Martin. He will organise floppy disks and the super 8mm celluloid at Dawn.
There is no need for the "u", sir.

I shall have my second, Fred, organize floppies with Martin.

Dawn is tricky. Pray you pick wisely sir.

So much fuss over nothing, simply put, watch Bale this season (and bit of last season), just see him with the ball on his flank, dude does basically whatever he likes. Extremely explosive player so far. It says alot about his ridicolous growth when Man U had 2-3 guys on him all the time.
