Del Piero is not the problem in the 4-3-1-2. The problem is that players like Sissoko, Melo and Poulsen suddenly need to be creative which they cant. In 4-2-3-1, players like Melo and Sissoko can fully concentrate on what they're actually good at, defending and hustling other players and leaving the offense to Camo, Giovinco and Diego.

Another bad thing about the 4-3-1-2 is that the fullbacks need to own their flank, that's why Inter are doing so good cuz Maicon is so freakishly good. Our fullbacks are not good enough to own a flank by themselves.

Then there is the fact that Diego can easily drift out of the games with no support and our game becomes easy to read cuz we have no width at all.

For example Diego, Giovinco, Camoranesi, Melo, Sissoko, Poulsen, Amauri and Trezeguet have all gained from this new formation and started playing much better.

I think we have something really good going on here and I would really love it if Ciro gives this formation a fair chance.

4-2-3-1 = Get the best out of our players
4-3-1-2 = For Del Piero.

we adjust when Ale isn't there, but our strongest team is when Ale is leading the team, of that there is absolutely no doubt...if we need to change the shape of the side for him, then it should be done.

Del Piero is good and all but to change back to a failing formation just to accommodate Del Piero would be stupid. Yes, Del Piero would solve a few problems but he won't give us better width, he won't make our fullbacks better and he won't make that 3 man midfield behind Diego better offensively.

12 goals in 3 games in the league, we are obviously doing something right with this new formation.

it failed precisely because Ale was missing...Iaquinta/Amauri/Trez in any combination will not work in a 4-3-1-2...we needed the creative forward to complement Diego and Camo, and well, Ale is the man for that

I know Ale is going to a better job with Amauri/Iaquinta/Trez but is Ale going to bring more width to our game? Is he going to make our fullbacks suddenly own their flank? Is he going to make that 3 man midfield better offensively? You didn't answer the important questions.

Camo is alot more suited to the 4-2-3-1. Camo is arguably one of our best players this season aswell so I would rather not pen him back. Meh can we not play Del Piero in the lone striker role and when Trez leaves their is no reason to replace him. That would be some creative stuff.

No chance. He is far too weak, physically...A target man, lone striker, needs height, or in the very least, exceptionally gritty body strength. The ability to receive the ball, hold up play, bring others into play, win high balls. Rooney and Tevez could be lone strikers because they are both very strong. Del Piero...no. Too flimsy.

Trezeguet has been playing alone up front. He's no target at all and I think Del Piero would do a much better job than Trezeguet. Obviously he has a disadvantage cuz of his height but Del Piero is excellent at holding the ball and delivering it to someone else.

You are mistaken, Suns...Trezeguet has been playing as a target man, not just for us recently, but throughout his career. And doing it rather well, hence his pheonmenal goalscoring record. I can agree that DP has admirable ball control, but physically he is a flower, offers nothing in the air, is easily shrugged off the ball, slower than trezeguet, weaker than trezeguet...and not a man suited to leading the line. What other teams, succesful teams, can you use as evidence that playing a flimsy flair merchant as a target man WORKS?
