Ajax player didn't impede him at all. There was no way he was getting anywhere close to the ball there. Passive offside is only supposed to come in to play if you impede the keeper getting to the ball or making a save.

Clearly not the case here imo.
even courtois conceded that ajax got the lead. he wasn't blocked by the ajax player at all.
Come one guys. Ref can't be blamed because he simply follows the laws of the game.

It's easy to say "he wouldn't have reached it anyways". You can't show any intentions to keep participating in the attack if you wanna stay in a passive offside. Easy as that. Eventually, he couldn't possibly know he was offside because that was very close otherwise he wouldn't have done anything.

RM players also thought it was a legit goal (no one even tried to protest). But according to the rules that was the right call to disallow it. Very subtle situation. Actually, this is a perfect example of what VAR was introduced for. It's irritating that RM benefit even from this situation, but, all emotions aside, referee did everything right.
