Redemption Ark, Alastair Reynolds. Reasonably good space opera, with a basis in hard SF. I'd recommend reading his first book, Revelation Space, first. This is the direct sequel, and the first book's shorter too!

Shadows of Forgotten ancestors-Carl Sagan. Very nice book bout mankind.
Prehistoric Europe-Timothy Champion(plus other 3). Very well documented book for archaeology dummies.
I recommend the first one, though, its a lot better and easier to read

Pyramids, by Terry Pratchett. One of his earlier ones, and merely okay.

He definately improved as a writer as he went on, which is nice. Most of them just seem to run out of ideas.

Still, some nice touches, like a genius mathematician camel called You Bastard (just imagine him earning his name!), two opposing armies who, determined to fight the same war as the last time (which was 3,000 years previously), build a bunch of wooden horses ("Look, if they're dumb enough to think we'll fall for that, they're certainly dumb enough to bring our ones home..."), one of which is on rockers, and pyramids that warp time.

Ajax, the Dutch, the War. Very good read. It's a bit rambling, more a collection of anecdotes on a theme than a story, but engrossing. It's very readable for some reason - the kind of thing you can really tear through in a couple of days if you've the time.
