Not so much for a player, but definitely for the metadata management of a large catalog of media files (something that's a necessity for me, especially with my Sonos system), Media Monkey has been great for me. It even has configurable rules-based synching and directory formatting with my mp3 player.

Songbird will need to top that for me to bother...
:agree:

the most amazing thing is it's tagging system, especially automatically tag from filenames, it's just magic. if you have a large collection this is really a must.

Automatic? What if you have different formats in filenames?

The best tagger I've seen is easytag, has everything; cddb lookup, filename to tag, tag to filename etc etc

well it's not 100% automatic, you have to set the criteria from which it will auto-tag. for example this is the most usual format in my collection:
    F:\Music\Rock\artist\<Year>-<Album>\<Track#> <Title>
there are tons formats to choose from. if the files inside the specific folder are all of different format naturally you won't be able to tag them all properly. perhaps then you can use the option "auto-tag from amazon", but i haven't used that option ever, tag from filename usually does it for me with the least effort.

I've absolutely bloody mastered using Easytag :D A bit of a necessity when you download as ridiculously much as I do :disagree:

That said, the CDDB lookup thing is kind of broken, and only works every now and then, and the manual search comes up with 0 answer 101/100 times

It'd also be nice if you could apply a bunch of fields (artist, album, genre etc.) to all files without having to click the little circle button and save for each field.

I never actually use that, so it doesn't bother me. But it seems a little broken, yes.

Is that so much of a hassle though? It's just title, artist, album most of the time. Also genre, track number are relevant. Still is pretty quick to do for the whole album at once. Amarok has this too, just select multiple tracks and edit their common parts.

Also, a lot of the time I have to modify every single field just to get rid of the rubbish comments/url/encoded by tags, so it'd actually save me a lot of time if I could just choose to remove all of those tag in one go, instead of deleting the field, clicking the button, saving etc.

It's not like it'd be difficult to implement.

The strange thing about changing the file information in Amarok is that when I open up the files in Easytag they haven't actually had their tags changed.

I am using Songbird on my Windoes machine, not that I use it but it's better than installing Winamp or using WMP.
