to be honest mate i think most sensible black americans realize the idiocy of bringing their forefathers heritage into their own identity. i mean most black americans will never have been to africa and probably never will and in a country full of immigrants grandchildren where do we stop?
african american, latin american, italian american, english american, dutch american.......... why do the blacks have to differentiate? there are thousands of americans with scottish heritage but probably couldn't tell a bag-pipe from a sporran and they don't feel the need to go about proclaiming themself mac-american
The use of African-American to describe black Americans is a mostly white manifestation. Sure in the late 1980s and early 1990s there was a big "Back to Africa" craze where blacks got into touch with their heritage and invented Kwanza, but the use of the term is very much a force of white American than it is of black America. Recently, since about 1996, icons in the black community, such as Smokey Robinson and Spike Lee, have been concentrating on eliminating the term African-American as the common reference to the black population in America. Most black people don't refer to themselves as African-Americans, but white people like the term because it's... err comfortable.

No Seven, you can call a muslim an idiot, that is not racist. Call him a sand nigger then it's racist.
I think not. If I call a muslim stupid, I'm a bigot. Your words, my man.

If a black man calls a white man a pig, no one says it's racism. If a white man calls a black man a monkey, they'll meet each other in court. THAT's racism. THAT is discrimination. Make no mistake, this is utter bullshit. We need to get rid of these moronic ideas. Positive discrimination in a court of law is not what we want.

I hope Onyewu pays for this.

    Seven,

I'll try to make this as simple as i can, so that you can understand. There is a big difference between calling a muslim stupid and saying that all muslims are stupid.

You call a muslim stupid, that's not racist. You say that all muslims are stupid, then that is racist.

Like if i called you(a Belgian) a pig, that's not racist. But if i said Belgians were pigs, then that is racist.

Maybe Van Damme thinks Onyewu is a dirty monkey.

You see? Not that easy now, huh.

And I can say all muslims are stupid and still not be racist. The criterion isn't that they're muslim. The criterion is that they believe the Quran is a holy book. And I think that people who believe that are stupid. Doesn't make me racist.

No but some words have racial connotations, so for example if you called an arab a sand nigger it's racist. When you call a black man a dirty monkey it's racist.

Now i don't know if Van Damme is a racist or he just said that word to get to Onyewu. But you cannot argue that it's not a racist thing to say.
