yes, the only time I could remember them doing well in pre world cup friendlies was 2006 when they went to Amstredam and beat Holland 3-0 then played Germany in Florence and destroyed them 4-1
The Netherlands game was in November 2005 and the Germany game was in March 2006 (I think)

They also had two drab and uninspiring draws with Switzerland (0-0) and Ukraine (1-1) a couple of weeks before the tournament started. Typical Italy style.

Not that anyone cares, but Fluminense's starting 11:

Rafael - Bruno, Gum, Fabricio, Carlinhos - Diguinho, Jean, Chiquinho, Conca - Sobis/Biro Biro/Kenedy, Valter.

Fluminense is currently 2nd in the league. We have one of the best teams in the league, but we've been in a poor form the past 2 games. Guys seemed tired. Fluminense plays a high pressing game, with lots of running and moving off the ball. The team should perform better since thay had 1 week rest. It's well organized by one of the top new coaches in the league.

We miss a few fundamental players, like GK Cavalieri (one of the best in Brazil), CBs Elivelton/Marlon (2 young CBs, Marlon was with Brazil U20 at Toulon - he's one of the top prospects of the country at the position, classic player with great passing and antecipating skills - Europe should keep an eye on him), AM Wagner (skilled left footed), Fred, and maybe Sobis (Fernandao, one of his closest friends, died and he's attending the funeral).

The team plays in a 422 losangle, middle with Diguinho as DM, Jean RCM, Fernandinho LCM, Conca AM.

Rafael - the GK is young and inexperienced. Can have a wonderful match, as well as fucking it up. Good between posts, bad reading of the game. Rather insecure.

Bruno - good and reliable RB, took a few seasons to gain confidence (ala Isla, he used to play scared of messing it up), but he's developed well.

Carlinhos - talent wise, perhaps the best LB in the country. But he's highly irregular. On a good day, he's a scary good and fast LB, who plays both feet and shoots well with his right. But can be a disaster in a bad day (mental lapses, lack of focus and concentration).

Gum - limited CB, has been playing better this year. But can fuck it up in one ball also. But this year he's been doing pretty well.

Fabricio - newcomer CB who has a very strong agent. Has been around a lot, many chances in big teams, but never made it. I don't expect good from him. First game for the club.

Diguinho - small hard tackling DM. Has some talent, but is also very irregular.

Jean - box to box CM - one of the few I could see playing in europe and could very well have a place at Juve, in a rotation/backup role. Similar to Marchisio. He's skilled and very fast. Good dribbling, decent shooting.

Chiquinho - lefty CM, can play as an AM/winger - very fast, but poor IQ and bad end product.

Conca - one of the most important players in the history of the club. Foreigner who has played most matches and most goals scored. Won the national league in 2010 as the main player of the team, playing all 38 games. Is talented, a good player. But he's on shitty form. Anyway he's quick, can dribble, and has good vision. His passing has benn off recently.

Biro Biro - homegrown 19yr oldd diminutive player, plays as an SS or winger. Very quick, can dribble, use both feet. Has problems to score. Poor man's Insigne.

Kenedy - homegrown 18yr old player. Athletic, is tall, strong, shoots very well, left footed. But he's more of a poacher. As an SS or winger, as he'll play, no good.

Sobis - experienced SS, he's not fast, but is intelligent, runs all the pitch, do some great job tracking back to defend. Amazing shooter, can score from anywhere with both feet. If he plays, don't let this guy shoot.

Valter - the most talented CF in the country right now. Fred's backup. Used to be very fat though, had mental lapses. Lost weight this year but still fatty. But don't let his body fool you. He's agile, very strong, and is an amazing finisher, also great for build up play. Great passing and vision. Better than Fred IMO.

Enjoy :)

Also Fluminense has a slow playing style. Techinical players, good passing, but not a lot of finishing/aggressiveness. They will probably hold the possession. Not very dangerous at counters, unless both fullbacks are on a good day.

Fluminense has a strong connection to Italy, since our colours are pretty much the same as the Azzurri flag.

Supporters are pumped up for this game, people consider it an historic game. Fluminense will go in to play hard. There will be strong support from fans, even though it will be a more familiar fanbase - don't expect people to be chanting all game, they'll be more watching and enjoying it. They actually even show support for Italy sometimes.

But given the context, and Italy with the backup team, and also Italy's horrible performance in friendlies, and their fear of having someone injured - I'd expect at least a draw in this game. But Fluminense may very well win.

I just hope Balotelli, Pirlo and Buffon can play a little, damn it!

For scouting purposes, here are the players that would go plain cheap to Juve, and could very well fill in the squad, in some really needy positions at Juve:

Bruno Vieira - RB - 28yrs - cost around 2/3M:

Very weak team.

Got a feeling Italy could be heading for a 2010 like performance; the team just doesn't seem balanced.
You know those are the bench players right? And not the starting 11 they will use vs England.

I like Prandelli's starting 11. Defence looks crap though. Fullbacks are horrible, Chiellini and Bonucci are kind of shaken, specially the latter. In a back 4 defense I don't trust either of them.

2 wrong offside calls in 5 mins. A similar thing happened in the other match vs Luxembourg. Imagine how crazy italiens can get if that happens in the World Cup.

However Italy's playing good, even with their B formation, even if Fluminense has a terrible defensive phase. Also against Luxembourg the result lied about the performance. Looks like Prandelli knows what to do. They'll go far in this competition as always (except in 2010, but you know, Juve and NT go hand in hand).

Great defense and goalkeeping! Lol

I don't know how prandelli could keep immobile and insigne out of the starting xi vs England. They play well together, they play with heart and desire and they are good! Immobile capo cannoniere vs balotelli who jogs around.

On a juve note. I don't understand selling him to borussia and then going out looking for a scoring forward. U had him right there!! Germans are smart, they bought him cheap, kid could blow up this wc if given the chance and next year.
