It is a dominant formation, just not an effective one. In Serie A where teams are afraid to attack us, and we struggle to break down opponents, it works well. However, we have seen its painfully obvious limitations in Europe this season. I don't care how many shots we had, and how we dominated the opponent. In the end, we looked lethargic, and lacking in ideas. More importantly, we failed to win, which is the only thing that matters.

In the future, I'd like to see some sort of hybrid 4-3-2-1/4-3-1-2 formation, but I am struggling to think of who we can realistically get to allow us to deploy that formation.

We have been terribly unlucky in this champions league run. Our early season form, where we would score goals and do everything right for the majority of the game then gift the opposition equalizers, hurt us bad. The two goals we gifted Galata in Turin and the goal we gifted Ronaldo cost us the qualification. Out of all the matches we played, the only game where we didn't perform well was the home match against Copenhagen. In the rest of the games we did well and then screwed ourselves by a lack of concentration in defense.

Yesterday's game was a joke. It wasn't a proper football match.

Bottom line: the ultra defensive/cautious approach, wont work in europe. At least this much must be obvious after 2 years and similar results in group stage.
Maybe this elimination, can work as a blessing in disguise -I thought Real games would do it- and starting from EL we see a different approach from him.

That's what I've been saying for a long time. You have to play your game and you have to be better than the other team. It's really good if you are good at defending but if you're no threat in attack no defense will help.

Let's be honest here, we can win Serie A with pretty much every formation you pick at this point. Serie A is won by beating smaller teams and those will be afraid of attacking us no matter what formation you use.

I don't get him really, he showed multiple times since he became our coach that he is not afraid to change the system. He used 424, 433 and 352, but he's still refusing to let go of this last one when playing in Europe. It's quite simple really, yes our players characteristics best fit this formation now, but a change is needed. Europa League will give us a chance to try something new at least. Maybe 3412, I don't know, but I trust him he will figure it out.

Also I'm convinced he will madly go for titles in all three competitions, he's like that, was a winner as a player and is a winner as a coach.

352 is not the best formation for our players. the only one that benefits it is Bonucci. Licht is much better as RB, Asamoah is not even a winger. Pirlo struggles because he has not too many players upfront which he could pass to. Llorente is much better as CF in one or three man attack supported by wingers. It doesn't make too much difference for our B2B besides the fact they have to drop to wings a lot and they aren't wingers.
Barzagli and Chiellini have the ball too much in this system. Barzagli is ok with the ball on his feet but Chiellini is awful with it. He's a classic old-style CB.

Although I'm surely wasting my time asking this question, what makes you believe that they think it is ok that we underachieve in Europe? Should they go on a rampage to show their displeasure? Maybe you are suggesting that Exor should pump in another €100m to 'show how much they care', and if they don't then they think it is 'ok'?

The first comment is such a cliché, and not applicable to this particular game. You don't make your own luck when the pitch turns into what it did. We can't control the weather, you don't make your own luck with that. We were unlucky there, and I'm not sure why this aspect is even being debated.

If of course you mean 'make your own luck' as 'play to the conditions better' then that is another thing, but we play a passing game and had no preparation to adjust to playing an approach reminiscent of Wimbledon in 1992.

If you mean we should have done better over the six games then of course I agree with you. But we could do absolutely nothing about the conditions of the last game or how it totally ruined our approach.

I'll address the elephant in the room since everyone is being too defensive. Conte takes most of the blame here, he stubbornly refused to change tactics and was deluded by the fact that he is topping quite possibly the worst serie a ever.

Oh it's the worst Serie A ever now? Funny, wasn't that at the beginning of the season before a ball was kicked, or when everyone was shitting themselves about Roma pulling away, or Napoli's pressure, improved Inter, Joseph Reds and our floundering 3-5-2. We go top and out of the CL and the tune changes.

Yeah, that's bs, we basically missed good chances to beat Copenhagen, and then went to sleep at the end of the home game with Galatasaray. Even one of those two moments being opposite would have made easy progression out of the group, but we have a habit of stumbling through hoping to fix it rather than doing a job.

These aren't excuses. I am pointing fingers at our defense and Buffon who are supposed to be the strongest and most experienced part of our squad. Individually they are very big names with lots of experience under their belts and collectively they are able to string runs of consecutive clean sheets with relative ease. Even our bench is better than most european giants. Over the last 9 Serie A games they have shown what they can do.

I cannot blame Vidal, Pirlo, Pogba, Tevez, Llorente, Asamoah and /or Quags they did their jobs in all the matches they played in apart from 1 copenhagen match. The lapses of concentration that lost us points were from Chiellini, Bonucci, Isla, Buffon and Cacares.

Conte's tactical setup was good in all the games we played except for the copenhagen match. We weren't outplayed by a single team we played and we managed to recover from the goals that our defenders gave for charity. Man Management is Conte's responsibility however and no matter how good our defenders look on paper as big names he should have ripped them a new one to fix their concentration problems at the beginning of the season. He did manage to fix the problem eventually (our current serie A clean sheets record are testament to that) but it was too little too late for the CL. The damage has already been done.
