This squad is not good enough to win the CL (well, the best team doesn't always win, and a fair dose of luck is always welcome), but with a couple of additions (more quality in the attacking third in the form of a quality RWF/LWF/AM hybrid, and a LWB/LB) we can definitely make a statement.

I would definitely play a back 4 against Madrid in the return with Licht, Barza, Ogbonna/Bonbon, and Caceres in defense, Pogba, Vidal, and Marchisio in midfield, and Vucinic, Llorente, and Tevez as our attacking triumvirate. Why are others allowed to insult some of us for providing an opinion. At first I thought I was the only one that presented that opinion and a complete page afterwards was people calling me stupid. A while after two or three others presented a similar opinion and again they were hammered with insults. I know I got a warning yesterday and it was well deserved but so should others.

Conte was a coward last night, I insist and there is nothing that can change my mind. The fact that he comes up with excuses other than his mistakes after every match is becoming pathetic. Really pathetic.

We need to have a solid plan A (4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2 perhaps), and revert to 3-5-2 or another variation when things don't go according to plan.

This is only Conte's 2'nd CL campaign, so he obviously still has a lot to learn.

I have leveled much blame on Conte for the way we closed last season out and for the opening part of this season. However, for the game he moved from the untenable 3-5-2 (which I don't think we should abandon entirely, but as we saw vs Munich and other CL games, it has its weaknesses, especially when the team isn't at full strength) to a more offensively minded 4-3-3 playing a flat for in defense to counter Real's wingers. That first goal could've happened against anyone, and whilst Caceres conspicuously played Ronaldo onside, Barzagli was arguably level with him anyway as he broke the trap. Chiellini can and should be allocated a fair share of blame for his antics, aside from a couple of great early tackles, he lost his composure. Conceding that kind of penalty when Buffon was clearly going to get the ball was almost unforgivable in itself, and whilst he shouldn't have put his arm up against Ronaldo, it was soft, at worst it warranted a yellow, a red card was beyond a joke, and I hope that the ref gets a nasty case of syphilis.

I can't fault Conte, even his subs, given our injury issues, were spot on. I just hope he doesn't abandon this tactical flexibility which was a hallmark of his first 18 months here...

Conte's squad is more suited for a 4-3-3 right now with Asamoah's displays in the middle, Giovinco better on a flank, the lack of decent wingbacks and Pirlo's bad form could make him leave the 3-5-2 for now.

I did have to laugh at that.

I think what he means is that he can play 4-3-3, but not the one people saw from us in the opening season, without Pepe. As some people may have noticed, Marchisio is not really a right winger, and especially not when asked to double up on Marcelo and Ronaldo. It would have been interesting to see a fit Pepe play there last night, but I wouldn't expect a gung-ho 4-3-3 with Giovinco from now on.

Great job by Conte setting up the game. We were clearly the much better team in the first half. The second half was sullied by a mistake by Chiello and an atrocious call from the ref.

Yes there are positive signs from this match and this is something we have to build upon this.

I think it's too much to say we outplayed them but we definitely fought and tried to play our game. Conte actually had some good ideas to surprise Ancelotti. We looked very good at times there and as I said before I hope we try to build upon this experience. We have to be more aggressive and more precise when we have the ball.
