anime cliches it aviods:

stupid fan service (boobs, panty shots etc.) - Is that really normal for anime series? lol
the tsundere characters
the mysterious silent guy
the emo strong lead chaarcter
the " i will overcome everything because frienship"
no stupid jokes
heroes being ridiculous wimps yet turning into amazing strong leads
no giant robots - Well, maybe they're not robots, but they're certainly giants
no 11 year old girl who is somehow stronger than all the grown up males in show Isn't Mikasa just that?

it's complex in the sense of how depressing it its. the show clearly foreshadows there is no happy outcome and you clerly see it and the desperation onb the faces of the characters, which makes them more human.

it also has some interesting ideas on it's own regarding what is considered living vs. mearly existing.
Comments in red in your quote.

I'll buy the 'living vs existing' theme and the depressing tone, but I'm not really sure if that makes the show more 'human'. But it's not like it's trying to be realistic anyway.

I never watch anime. I watched Studio Ghibli and Dragon Ball (if that counts), but besides that nada. A friend (to my surprise) basically made me watch this show. It's okish, but I'm perplexed by how you can watch more than 2 episodes of it in a row without getting a headache. Watching them yell and overreact to everything is tiring as hell. Nuances are completely lacking.

Are all anime shows like that? Sorry if I sound like a grumpy old man. :D

either you have been around the japanese style or you havent, cultures dramatize in different ways and as far as nihon some enjoy it, other get over it and the rest just dont dig it. i personally find it refreshing especially since i used to be really into japanese culture to the point of double majoring in the japanese language in college. as far as nuances, it is by far the most nuanced culture i know, it's just that instead of one level below the surface as it is with most cultures, the japanese make it a lot harder and go a few levels deeper.
To answer your question, no not all anime is like that as a matter of fact there are dozens of sub-genres, but i really doubt you will find something you would like based on your review of attack on titan.

mikasa and erin start out as 13 or 15 in the first episode, but by the 3rd or fourth i think 2-4 years pass. and she doesnt relly on brute force, but rather her skill in operating the equimpent.

if you don't like the theme of giants and such, watch jormungund or black lagoon. they have no elemt of supernatural.

jormunggund is about a child soldier who gets recruited by a billionaire arms dealer.

Black Lagoon is aboout a office guy who joins a band of mercenaries that operate in illegal activities

Would love to read an in-depth analysis of the many layers below the surface in "Attack on Titan" though. :D

I have absolutely nothing against supernatural elements or giants for that matter. I was just surprised you highlighted the fact that it doesn't have giant robots. :)

i meant nuances on themes discussed such as individual vs group, myth of immunity from outsiders(japan), and japan(eren's city) eventually needing to fend for themselves if shit hits the fan(they depend heavily on US in defense)

 I don't know if it's because they mixed reality with fantasy...CERN is a real corporation, the Hadron Collider is science fact, the black hole theories, John Titor turning out to be a real person who claimed that he was from the year 2036, the time travel experiments, the butterfly effects of time travel, the infinite time loop. It was all just too entertaining to me. :D

I actually cried when I though Christina was going to die.

AoT is not bad, but I have seen better. I didn't read the manga. Did we find out where the Titans came from yet? And who made the man-made titans?

    you would love "berserk" btw

I Just read the synopsis...I dunno.

Oh btw I tried to watch Code Geese or however the hell it was spelt...nearly died from boredom. There was also this death demon one where the guy wrote names in a book or something..ickfest...in other words I am really picky. :p

Ok I will try 2 episodes when I have some time. In return you have to watch 2 episodes of Sailor Moon. :p

My 2 favourite characters on Steins;gate

Who was John Titor's mother? I was thinking Mayuri but John still existed even when Mayuri died in the time lines so I dunno.
