Ogbonna had a very poor season according to the Italian newspapers ratings.

In Gazzetta's ratings, of all the defenders in the league that played +20 matches, he's 65th out of 86 defenders, with a media rating of 5,75. Even the Turin based Tuttosport gave him a media 5,80 rating for the whole season.*
Compared to the other Torino defenders, he's behind all of them.

I guess Conte is seeing something in him. The same thing Prandelli saw previously. But all he has are his serie B performances against inferior players. His serie A season, at least judging from the ratings and those who watched him, has been almost a catastrophe. It's yet to be seen if we'd be paying for the hype or his quality. Then again, in the NT he got to play and do the training with a lot of Juventus defenders, and perhaps they were the ones who recognized the quality.

* In order to see how biased Tuttosport is about Turin based players, note that according to Tuttosport, the best 5 defenders in serie A last year were Torino's Rodriguez (6,48) and D' Ambrosio (6,31), as well as Juve's Barzagli (6,44), Chiellini (6,35) and Bonucci (6,26). Only behind them in 6th place is Campagnaro with 6,23 :p And even the incredibly biased Tuttosport gave a petty 5,80 to Ogbonna. It must have been a terrible season for him.
That's fine - I've no problem disagreeing with Italian journalists.

Rodriguez was horrible whenever I saw him, so goodness knows how he got such a high rating.

With a three CB back line, Caceres isn't enough.

We don't have one true CB back up. Peluso is a LB, Marrone is a CM, and Caceres is a RB.

Ogbonna would be a true, quality CB and could relieve exhaustion from our defenders and injury cases.

Agreed.

I just don't see why decent (young) quality depth is a bad thing.

If it's $ thing then people shouldn't complain when its being spent as a future investment. Plus, Conte will mold the dude into the boss our 3 CBs have become.

Benfica moving in for Doria. Another young talent lost in our pursuit for Italian players.

Can imagine Doria will be another James Rodriguez case.

Doria is better off going to Benfica than here, we won't give him the space to play like he would there, so his growth there is pretty irrelevant for us.
