I think it has more to do with him playing a role with more defensive responsibility. He is playing more as a regular midfielders role for Arg.

He has Tevez-Higuain-Messi scoring the goal and playing infront of him.
being in a 4 man mid with Maxi and Mascherano means he cant bomb forward. I would think that is obvious.

So that justifies for his inability to dribble past anyone, and make decent passes/crosses?
