Fuck Sprint and fuck HTC. They've decided not to roll out the Froyo update on the Hero. I just bought it back in March on a 2 year contract but with no further upgrades to it what is the point? Sure I can upgrade it myself but everyone is throwing a lot of caution to people who do this because a lot will not function with it (e.g. the camera).

:( I wish I had waited and gotten the Evo 4G.

Tahir, you can always mod your Hero and load FroYo on yourself

just check out XDA on how to do it. It should be easy to find

That's what I'm talking about; they're cautioning people about doing that because you lose some functionality with it. Maybe over time someone will figure out a way to do it without that risk. I'll wait until then and curse Sprint meanwhile.

One thing is certain, I will buy out of my contract when I have the money and I will get all my phones online (from Europe if I have to) and never get a CDMA phone ever.

It's not about CDMA. It's about the manufacturer. HTC has been extremely choosy when it comes to SW updates for their phones. Low-end phones never get them. High end phones get em even before they're released to the market. It's just shit really. No matter how good their phones are, I'm never buying another HTC due to their shitty SW support policy.

I know it's not about CDMA but if I get a GSM phone I can just get a sim card and use a phone without getting a contract with a provider where as if I keep getting CDMA phones I'll have to get on a contract to get a service.

edit: Which makes me think; Dru, I know you go through phones all the time...how do you do it? I assume you're not on a contract with anyone.

I'm thinking of dipping my toes into the Android dev waters, and I've started reading up on the introductory documentation.

Problem is I know zero java :( It'll be a steep learning curve but it's something I'd like to at least try. Anyone got any experience with this kind of thing?

I'm pretty sure you ought to start with java. But once you get a bit into it there are other options coming out. Mono is being ported to android, so in theory that gives you C# and maybe dynamic languages too down the line. Although I hear python and ruby are supposed to run natively on Android already.

New market info. Android has a growth of 800+% currently (up front last year). Apple stagnated, Microsoft in free fall. Symbian still #1.

This is from a report that you can't get without paying for ( :lazy: ), so here's the story from a Norwegian IT paper:
http://translate.google.com/transla...94/voldsom-vekst-i-android-salget&sl=no&tl=en

That's wordwide marketshare btw.

43.5% Symbian
18% RIM (Blackberry)
17.1% Android
13.5% iPhone
4.5% Microsoft

Yeah, so Android is a success. I wonder if it can actually conquer the market and convince Nokia (still the biggest phone vendor) to drop their stuff and join Android.
