I'd say 50% of the success of our current team is down to having Pirlo this season, really worrying what would happen to us without him.

We desperately need a replacement for him.....

Pfff Poulsen....

Get Mellberg back!
Yeah, you're only a viking away from winning serie A.

If they get a proper SS this winter to convert all those chances he creates, I can see them making a run for the title.
Who they really need is Simon Poulsen to sort out their defense so the other Poulsen is set free from defensive duties and scores himself.

Just think of last season--us clearing a corner and Melo or anyone else getting the ball to distribute while the defence tries to get back its shape, and then one retarded backheel pass or misguided long pass back to the opponent's D later and we face another attacking wave. Pirlo is the only player capable of bringing some calm while we transition from defence to attack.

Which brings me to another point. Even though we don't have to and probably can't replace Pirlo directly--probably have to replace him with a creative player in another position (CAM or winger), we still have to get a midfielder that can bring the ball out of defence calmly, hold on to the ball and slow the play down if need be. Marchisio can't and I don't know if Vidal can, but I doubt. Which is why I doubt a 4-4-2 with those 2 in the mid can work long term. It doesn't have to be some flashy regista--we had Emerson and Vieira that did it well enough.
I think Marchisio can do it, he knows how to keep the flow from the back. I won't be surprised if Conte decided to use the same 4-3-3 with Marchisio in Pirlo's position. Vidal probably could but I notice he's not that comfortable around pressure plus it's a waste to have him sit on the back while he has the energy to run the whole match. And it's a waste to put Marchisio on the back at all times while he has the instinct to threat the defense at the front. I'd give the edge to Pazienza; he played the deep midfielder role the whole season in Napoli, he can also keep the pass simple and sitting on the back while Vidal and Marchisio playing more freely because ultimately Pazienza is a better defender than Pirlo.

The whole system isn't built around Pirlo, rather it's Pirlo who strengthen it. It shows on the Palermo match: yes Pirlo has generated some great chances but the three goals came from the whole team rather than from him. The most important thing is Conte's little adjustment and having the same winning mentality even without their best passer.

Yea i agree. He could easily play instead of Pirlo. His passing and crossing are very solid. He also can hold the ball in his feet. The problem is, as JCK said, that Del Piero would spend more time infront of their goal than in our midfield.
Anyway it would be interesting to see him in the midfield. I mean, if Rooney can play there, Ale can too.
