If we believe Gomes can become a top-class player the same way we believed Dybala could, there should be no reason not to pay those 40 millions, as much as it may hurt. Prices of player that can make a difference at a club with CL ambitions won't get cheaper, whether we like it or not.

If we don't believe in Gomes as much as we did in Dybala we obviously shouldn't spend 40m. I don't follow Valencia, so i can't tell what's right.

I can't help but wonder if we are trying to see what we can do with Mascherano before going all in here (if we even were planning on it).

I fail to see how they can be related considering the wildly different qualities they have. And near decade between them.
Well, depending on the price for Mascherano, he might be a more valuable addition than Gomes if our plan is to with the CL in 2 years. Sure, Gomes is the better longer investment but Mascherano is WC in two positions whereas Gomes is still making a name for himself and nothing near to what Mascherano would add.

The age shouldn't make any difference at the moment. It should be about who adds what. Macherano for the next 2-3 years would add more than Gomes.

Fuck i hate losing a player to epl team and they dont play cl ...fuck
Get used to it. The new economics is going to be bidding up players for the EPL to spend lavishly and go broke on when your real target is something else when the rest of the clubs are fighting for scraps.

Until the EPL proves they can spend money wisely, however, there's nothing that says the EPL has the advantage even with that money. They certainly don't know what they're doing with it.

Gomes would be shit in ManUnt... If we really are trying to get him, there's no way we lose him.

When we passed a freebie like Banega and a 26m-gundogan It means we have something. We aren't that dumb

Nah I rather get Gomes, our team needs certain type of upgrade to focus on, and creative/attacking CM is key. Mascherano is great and we should get it done since it would be amazing addition, but it should be together with our main focus and not instead of.

Saving some money on Mascherano versus Gomes could help give us the extra money to get a player like Pjanic, for example. No?

If Mourinho wants him at ManUtd... he's gone.

Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira, Tiago, and Maniche all were clients of Jorge Mendes, and followed Mourinho to Chelsea.
Di María and Coentrao were also clients of Jorge Mendes and moved to Real Madrid when Mou was there.

I'd hope Gomes has some say on this Mendes does work for him after all. If he's smart he should come here to grow and play without much pressure from the start. In United he would be expected to be an instant hit and savior for them, should he disappoint he'd be thrown under the bus quite fast without much hesitation. From what I've heard his mentality is still a bit suspect and this would be the perfect place to improve on that.
