If we paid Madrid it could be more financial viable than Madrid outright selling the player:
1) Where does Morata want to go? If I understand correctly, the contract with Madrid is already signed so he has no choice. However, selling to an EPL would involve a new contract, which means the combination of highest bidder & suitability is important. Does Morata go to Tottenham for 50 million euro? Would Arsenal spend 60 million?
2) The fact that we bought him for 20 million gives us an advantage in competing for the player. Say Arsenal offers 40 million euro. That is the same as us offering Real Madrid 10 million euro to eliminate the clause. 50 million is the same as 20 million. If we really want to retain the play, RM should settle for 10-20 million unless an EPL team (that Morata wants to play for) becomes stupid and offers 60-70 million, which is where I don't see Beppe forking out 30 million or 40 million.
If an EPL team pays 60 million we should be thankful because that is wasted money, and then we should go an try to sell Zaza for 40 million.
This whole EPL money advantage makes me think of how much money will be wasted on mediocre talent over the next decade because mid-table teams with stupid management have the tolerance to overpay. Like any import/export market, eventually they will just make the exporters rich.
