His off the ball movement is fantastic and he isnt a static striker at all. Just needs the goals, our team always performs better when he's on. Simple as that.

You'd think that was obvious for everyone by now. Apparently, it's not.

Have you guys noticed that whenever we play Matri, we score more? Like the first half of last season we were killing it. I think it may not be the 3-5-2 formation as much as the movement a player like Matri brings. Our midfield gets more space to move forward and score more. Boriello didn't provide movement, he provided hold up play, which meant he was easier to mark and thus defenders wouldn't be scrambling all over the place trying to nullify potential danger.

I still can't believe this thread. Sure, Matri has some great movement, but his touch is horrible, just horrible. I don't think it's given that we perform better with him on either. Yesterday's match was pretty much impossible not to win, and I can't see why we couldn't have won bigger with Quag or Bendtner on. Maybe his movement is good, but when he's lacking pretty much everything else, I don't think it's justifiable to let him be a starter. He's like a poor man's Fernando Torres in the early Chelsea days. It's horrible to watch. Matri has scored 1 goal in 17 (or is it 18?) matches, and maybe it's because we were already up 3-0 when he missed his one on one chance that you're all just forgiving him so easily, but if he had missed that chance at 1-1 against Nordsjælland in Copenhagen, this thread would have been a slaughterhouse. It's not like Matri hasn't had his chance to prove himself, now I feel like we have to give Quag and Bendtner a chance to prove themselves (Vucinic and Gio are 1st and 2nd choice if you ask me).

I'm with you. How people are spinning his performance from yesterday into something positive and ultimately an argument for why he should start next game is hilarious

It's a must score chance no matter how you put it. Furthermore, I would even say that it's easier to score that goal when you're up 3-0 without the pressure. My point is this: If Matri can't even score on that chance when we're up 3-0, how should he be able to actually score a decisive goal.

So you actually think Matri decided to go around the keeper because it was adventurous? No way in hell. He did it because he thought it would be the easiest way to score. With 1 goal in 17 matches and with no confidence at all, you're desperate to score.

Matri's finishing abilities is worthy of criticism, no one is disputing that. But there are aspects to his play which really help the team out. Some see them, some don't, some see them but still don't care about them or value them, and that's fine.

He obviously should have scored, there is no disputing that. Any striker at this level should be able to score or force something spectacular, but many don't.

The mistake Matri made, wasn't that he decided to try go round the keeper, but the direction which he chose. Matri should have gone wide on his right as it was easier to pass the goaler, and while the angle would have been narrower, he would have been past the goaler with no chance of a defender getting there. Instead, he went inside on his left, which would have made the angle much more favourable as he would have been in the centre of the goal, however, the goalkeeper was already leaning a bit more towards that side, and there was a defender (okore i believe) who was running through the middle.

So to conclude, the mistake wasn't that he tried to dribble the keeper, but rather that he chose to go round the left side rather than round the right

In theory, you are right, but that is not how it works in real life. When a player is in this position he's not thinking "the easiest thing would be to shoot before the goalkeepers comes to close to me" or something like that, he's following his instinct. Maybe Matri's instinct told him that the keeper looked a bit weak or something like that and decided to go around him. But we don't know that. But there's no doubt in my mind that Matri did what he did because he thought it would be the easiest way to score.
